“Very Good Working on Great”
Reviewed May 17, 2014

Four of us had an early evening dinner on a Monday at Torc, which recently opened in downtown Napa.

Sean O'Toole is a thinking man's restauranteur. He has carefully envisioned a unique and varied small menu that offers little bites, interesting sides, a nice array of entrees along with a mid-price to over the top wine list. His execution is flawless. His staff is well trained and very engaging. Dishes arrive in a well paced manner and in an order that allows everyone at the table to get a taste. The space is modern, sleek without being noisy or overstated. You really have to like what is going on here and its a great addition to what already is a rich Downtown Napa scene.

Why very good, not great? As you would expect, some dishes are better than others though there was not an obvious miss. The menu changes so I will not dwell on anything specific here and other reviews mention some "must try" items.. Portions are small, really quite small. For all the work that he is putting into excellence a little bit more on the plate would make a difference. Prices are high. Not eye watering but it would be lovely to think that his great work could be offered up with a mid-range Prix fix deal or two at a price that would make it more likely to get my drop in business. No one walked away hungry but at $70 a person with a $50 bottle of wine is not an every day affair.

Torc is meeting the high standard you should expect in Napa and as a local that is something to celebrate. We look forward to seeing it evolve.

“Great new restaurant in downtown Napa!”
Reviewed April 30, 2014

We ate at Torc recently while on a trip to Napa. We have found most of the restaurants in Napa to be good but not great so we were pleasantly surprised at how great Torc is. Our waitress was super friendly and was able to guide us as to how much food to order for just the two of us. We had the Jamon Iberico which is similar to prosciutto and the Farmer's Market Vegetable Salad to share. Both were delicious. My husband ordered the halibut and I had the short rib then we had the caramel bar for dessert. We enjoyed everything! The atmosphere is really cool, I loved the open kitched, you can watch the chefs in action.

Would tell you to just order the appetizers but the rest of the meal was just as good! Apps.- pork with curry powder and a peanut sauce (our favorite part), yellowtail tuna with chili sauce, avocados
Main- chicken for 2 potatoes, asparagus, and the egg meal
Dessert- carmel bar and sunflower seed ice cream, Carmel ice
