“Never Got A Chance”
Reviewed August 27, 2007

We live in the Napa Valley and have for various reasons never dined at La Toque. Our first consideration, being local, was to call the restaurant and ask simply for their corkage fees or requirements. We choose our wines carefully and often prefer to take a special bottle for dinner.

After two calls and left messages we abandoned the thought of dining there. The restaurant never called back. We never spoke to a real person. Apparently, their only preferred form of communication are on-line reservations, e-mails, or phone message tag.

There are many great restaurants in the valley that go out of their way to personalize their service and are more than willing to take the time to answer even the most basic dining questions.

“Simply Perfect”
Reviewed August 26, 2007

Eight of us visited La Toque to celebrate the birthdays of two individuals in our group. We were hoping to make it a special evening and we were not disappointed. The sommelier was incredibly helpful and picked out some delicious (and reasonably priced) wines. The service was exactly what you would expect in a 5-star restaurant. As for the food, it was phenomenal. The white truffle ravioli particularly stood out. The eight of us all would consider ourselves experienced diners and it was unanimous amongst the group that it was the best meal any of us had ever had. The only downside is the price, but for the quality of service and food, it is to be expected.

“Disappointing dining experience”
Reviewed August 14, 2007

We dined here on a Thursday evening in August and the restaurant was only half full. Good reason: the value is not there. It's prix fixe and limited choices (two per course). Plates are very small, except for a decent portion of fois gras. Food is tasty, desserts not inspired at all, and in total not close to being worth the price. Service is fair, not charming and tip is fixed (at a minimum of 16%). They will be moving from current location hoping to get more business. Location is not the issue, value is. There are so many better choices in the valley.

“Amazing Experience!”
Reviewed June 9, 2007

Everything was perfect when my boyfriend and I dined here for his birthday. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by the staff and seated right away in front of a cozy fire. The server was friendly and very attentive throughout the entire night. The Sommelier was amazing, he seemed to know everything there is to know about wine! Overall the night was more than I expected and I will definatly be returning!

“I'll never return!”
Reviewed May 27, 2007

We had dinner there in September with a party of eight and had a very good time and meal so I decided to have my wife's birthday dinner there. What a mistake!!!!!!!!
The food this time was mediocore at best. The service was slow and inattentive. The wine manager (I doubt he's a sommelier) could not have seemed more bothered if he tried even though four of us spent over $600 on wine. The large party in the next room was his sole focus. We ordered desert and port and desert arrived with no sign of the port. After getting up to find our server and "Mr. Attitude" with no success we asked for the check and left. Right before we left the staff came over and tried to apologize, advising us that the port was on "the house". We don't seek or need "gifts". My wife's birthday dinner was a complete disaster thanks to the folks at La Toque who were far more interested in larger parties and watching the chef/owner dismember a pig for the staff Memorial Day outing, rather than providing the food and service that a so-called five star restaurant should have automatically. In reading other reviews I note that we too were there on a Sunday night, perhaps if this is only representative of Sundays they might consider closing on that day, otherwise they should note that when one spends over $1000 for a meal one has the right to expect more.
