“An amazing gem of a winery in the heart of Napa Valley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2011

White Rock is a small Stag's Leap district winery which pre-dates the Stag's Leap designation. Call ahead and if you are fortunate you can make an appointment for a tour given by the owner Henry or his winemaker son Chris. No fancy visitor center, no multimillion dollar landscaping, no fancy laminated marketing material here. This is just a genuine, honest, family owned winery that sells almost all of its estate grown and bottled wines at the winery so if you aren't a buyer don't waste their time. The wines are reasonably price and you won't find a more beautiful vineyard in all of Napa. The vineyard, lovingly tended to by eldest son Michael is made up of vines planted throughout the 70's and 80's in the well drained volcanic soil along Soda Canyon road and the wines reflect the maturity of the vines. Their chardonnay is crisp and refreshing and produced in the French style without all the over the top oak common in today's market. The Vandendriessche's also grow all five Bordeaux grapes and their claret is a wonderful cabernet sauvignon dominated blend that is perfectly balance and features a fruit forward style which avoids the muscle bound manipulation that so many of the other wines of the area suffer from at the hands of their trophy wine producers. White Rock also offers some reserve reds and whites and their Laureate red blend is, hands down, one of the most delicious and reasonably priced wines that Napa has to offer. All wines are bottle aged and released two to three years later than many other Napa wineries when they are ready to be consumed. White Rock is truly a rustic gem where tradition still holds sway and the wines are the star of the show
