Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

“Hess Collection Winery - Off beaten path - Off Beat Artifacts on Display”

Wine is OK, Winery is conventional, building the best unlimited money could buy. Hospitality is excellent; staff works hard to please visitors who have, themselves, worked hard just to get here.
Then comes the elevator (nicest modern artifact) and the galleries.

Imagine a room full of headless humanoids, scrutinize them - then you may want to be somewhere else. I did and fled to the gardens - something I understood. Or did I?

It was such a putoff that I had no time for mundane stuff like Wine!

This place is quite different.

“Wonderful Experience”
Reviewed March 14, 2014

Hess Winery is a very unique experience of wine and art. We had signed up for the wine tasting class and we are so glad that we did. Our instructor was extremely knowledgeable and went over and above so that our experience was a remarkable one. I would recommend taking the wine tasting class if you want to further appreciate and enjoy wines.
The winery setting is beautiful and the art collection is a very unique one. The wine tasting was wonderful specially after taking the wine tasting class. We will definitely visit again.

“Beautiful Winery”
Reviewed March 13, 2014

Hess Winery isn't like any other winery that my sisters and I had visited on our day in Sonoma. It's hidden up on the side of a mountain, through and past a residential area. We did not get to tour the museum, because we had arrived on the later side, but the architecture and setting of the winery was just gorgeous.

Berenice, our "wine guide", was exquisite. She was extremely knowledgeable with the wines, warm and inviting and really made us feel at home while tasting. We mentioned that we all worked in the service industry, that one of our employer's carries Hess and she waived our tasting fee for us! What a great surprise!

Hess's Artezin Charbono was one of our favorites, however Hess really does bring a versatile collection of wines to the table; we were all impressed with each wine that we tasted.

Vielen Dank Berenice und wir kommen wieder!

“Art and wine---can't go wrong.”
Reviewed March 7, 2014

The wine tasting is very reasonable as it is, but not charged if you buy 6 bottles. The wine is good and not ultra-pricey. The grounds are lovely. The art gallery is interesting. A bit off the beaten track and worth it.

“The best Wine + the best art = the perfect match.”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

The Hess Collection isn't just a unique winery but also a stunning art collection.
We were pleasantly surprised to find paintings of Bacon, Motherwell, Diebencorn, Baselitz, Sean Scully, Morris Louis, Gerard Richter, Frank Stella and much more!
All surrounded by a spectacular estate, excellent wines and a truly skilled staff.
Don't miss it!
