Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

This winery is a must for anyone who enjoys contemporary art. The surrounding property is beautifully landscaped. This is a rare opportunity that is free to the public.

This winery was so much fun. The art was really fun to look at as the collection had a lot of different things that were pretty cool to look at. Even if you don't frequent art museums, I think most people would see something intriguing.

All the people who work there are so nice and seem so happy to be there.

We took a complimentary tour. It was a nice little tour giving some history, a short film and a walk to one of the vineyards. We really enjoyed it.

The wine tasting was great. The wine was very good and everyone was having a great time. We talked to a lot of other visitors and got some great tips on other places to visit.

Would definitely reccomend.

We were at the end of a wine tasting experience visiting several wineries. We were quite disappointed when we pulled up to Hess only to find it closed for a private party for the employees. As our car started to pull away a man who turned out to be the wine maker rushed out and offered us to come join the event! We spent the next 45 minutes enjoying some great hospitality and some great wine. The wine was great and the people even better.

Beautiful place, way up the hill and worth the drive. Enjoyed the small museum and the staff was extremely friendly, the wines delicious, and there is a lovely little gift shop with lots of fun items such as jewelry, books, souvenirs. Very accommodating, and we purchased several bottles from here. The grounds are just beautiful, including a beautiful outdoor fish pond and outdoor seating.

The winery is in the hills west of Napa, away from the busy-ness of the main roads. The winetasting room is staffed by servers who are friendly and knowledgeable -- and the wines are good. The art in the museum is interesting and thought-provoking. This is a lovely, secluded place to get away from the crowds.
