“Chocolate and Wine!!”

Attraction details
Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

“Chocolate and Wine!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2013

We had no idea, but we were the first folks to take the "Chocolate, wine and art tour"! The tour basically took us through the art collection of the Hess collection that was very interesting and different than most of the art you see in Napa.

We didn't really see much of the vineyard grounds, but I think that's okay since we had seen a lot of vineyards over the course of the day.

The actual chocolate/wine tasting was really great. We sat down in what felt like a private room. There was 8 pieces of chocolate laid out ready to be paired with 4 different wines. The chocolate was perfectly paired and tasting the difference between the raw chocolate and the tempered chocolate was really interesting and different.

Overall, I loved it and would definitely do it again.

“lovely visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

after visiting Castelle Amoroso, we headed over to the Hess Collection. There was no one there, so we really got to spend some time with the art - free!!!! What a better way to spend $ than to make a castle and charge big bucks for it. You have to be "into" art - check out their website - if so, do go. We are big Goldsworthy fans and loved seeing his 2 works there.

“Did art collection tour & food pairing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013

Great experience. We had a private tour of the art collection and then a tasting with food pairings. Our guide, Emily, explained the background of the operation and then toured us through the collection with very helpful commentary. Then we went to a lovely room for tastings of three wines with small plates of crab, tuna and pork. I had noted when I booked this tour that my husband has celiac and they had no problem accommodating with gluten-free choices.

“Hess Winery Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2013

My wife and I visited the Hess Winery (formerly Christian Bros) and found it to be one of those special places we will always fondly remember. The staff were all very courteous and helpful and Larry our host was very knowledgeable and helpful in choosing a good wine. We especially enjoyed the very picturesque location in a part of Napa Valley off the beaten path that offers a personalized experience unlike all others where the tour buses go. After our wine tasting experience we visited the Hess Art Collection and the gardens on site for a truly romantic experience with the loved one.

“Depends on your mood”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

The art is solid, but not stellar. I particularly like the huge paintings on the third floor, but there's lots of room for other opinions on the art.

The wine is okay, but not grand. They have some unusual offerings for those adventurous types. The tasting fee, $10 for four wines, is attractive as is walking around an art gallery and the nice setting outside. But if you just want a taste of Napa red, they have that two for more than twice the price, there are better choices.

But it's a long way to go if you aren't in the mood to look at art or try their more adventurous offerings.
