Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

Yes the art is modern but still quite charming. There's a terrific typewriter that is on fire! We also had a private wine tasting which was fine as well.

Being Australian we found it hard to find the big bold Shiraz, but we did not mind some of the Reds here.

Great wines, beautiful drive up there and pretty property with koi ponds. Wines were great. Gift shop and art a plus! A Napa must.

If you're ever invited or want to schedule a private tasting, do not hesitate here! Regardless, the wines for me were stand outs!! I was invited to a private tasting, little did I know I'd have an exclusive look through their facility including the lab, kitchen, etc. The library room and private lanai were poignantly facing west; the tasting scheduled at 12:30, so the rich Calif. sun greeted us as we broke for bio breaks and photos. The views of the vineyard, the canopy of windswept trees that lined the curvy road as we traveled to the vineyard. Just breath taking! We had the leisure to enjoy the space for 3 hours which included: ample tasting, detailed descriptions of the varietals & winery, chef's exquisitely prepared & favorite cheese/snack pairings, and Mary's insight of wine knowledge. She was FANTASTIC! She also spoke fluent Spanish, had the bone structure of a model, and the articulation for fine arts. Among the wines: there were 2 standouts that blew me away! Purchased 3: Chardonnay, 19 Block Cuvee, Artezin Carignan. I grade wines on a 5 point scale, the last 2 listed here rec'd 6 points if you get my drift.

A little bit away from the highway bustle, this is a nice tasting room with pleasant (but not outstanding) wines. Very friendly staff. We did not have time to see the modern art collection, which is reportedly quite good.
