We went with another couple on the Vista Dome train for a birthday. All four agreed that it was a very nice experience and the other couple decided to purchase a gift certificate for their mother for a Christmas gift. The Vista Dome is slightly more expensive, but I think it is worth the extra cost. You sit higher up so the views are lovely and it is more private than the other cars - people are not walking through the aisles to get to the observation deck, wine tasting car, etc. All of us agreed that the food was excellent, not necessarily expected that quality considering it is all cooked on the train. Service was excellent, friendly yet discreet. Water glasses were filled promptly and we were given a sample of the wine that was suggested before making a decision about which wine to order. This time of year (end of Sept), most of the trip is in darkness but the sunset is spectacular over the mountains and vineyards. After the trip all of us agreed that it was a great evening and worth the cost.

Food was ok, journey at night went on a bit, service was good. Wouldn't do it again, especially not for the price.

This was one of the first events I booked for our week in San Francisco. Booking on the website was easy and the directions provided were the clearest we have ever had- photos of the dock and ferry, you can't go wrong.
There was a reasonable welcome at the station with a good introductory presentation, the wines at the tasting were poor and best if this was omitted.
Efficient boarding of the train though the ubiquitous photo was annoying.
We sat with a lovely couple for lunch. The meal was delicious and wine good. We stopped at the Grgich Winery. The tour was efficient but an hour is barely enough time and tasting 6 wines over ambitious. We boarded the train again for dessert and coffee and we purchased sparkling wine.
The staff were all excellent. The train moves at a sedate pace and you get a good view of the countryside. We had plenty of time to explore the train.
We had ample time in Napa to visit fabulous Oxbow Market and did a winnery tasting though the free voucher provided was unnecessary as the tasting was complimentary.anyway.
It was a well organised and memorable excursion and an excellent introduction to Napa Valley.

You cannot go wrong with this! Booked this for my boyfriend who has been working on the railroad for 37 years, the experience of seeing this awesome train was so satisfying and exciting for him. I was also visiting my son, daughter-in-law and grandson for his first birthday and didn't want to spend time without them but was a little apprehensive about bringing a one year old. As it turns out that was one worry that was not warranted, the staff was welcoming and very glad to have us. Visiting the kitchen to entertain the baby was delightful, Chef actually came to welcome us and to make sure we were satisfied with the meal...were we ever!!! Delightful, hope I get the chance to do it again! Thank you Napa Valley Wine Train. Pat

Wonderful meal, with the wine country gliding by your table. The lamb was expertly prepared and dessert was the perfect ending to a great meal.
