The atmosphere is very classy. Two complaints. The seating area is not sloped enough, so it is difficult to see the stage when the seats infront of you are occupied. Elevating the stage higher would help sight lines too.

We spent an afternoon at Ironstone prior to an Eagles' concert at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds. This place was so great I can't get it out of my head. The ampitheater area was so lush, green, and beautiful..I thought I was in heaven. There are restaurants, a small museum with a huge gold flake to gander at, a small pond with ducks and geese, a gift shop, and of course, wine tasting. The wine there is very, very good! And affordable. I've drank wine that cost three times as much and tasted only half as good. I would recommend the Expression and Obsession (their sweet red and white wines). You'd think you were drinking Kool-Aid they taste so good. If you're every in Calevaras County for any reason, whether staying there or just driving through, I highly recommend taking a couple hours and paying this gem a visit.

The setting is postcard perfect! This winery is the highlight of a wine tasting day through Murphys. Famous not only for the fine wines they make, but also their museum with that huge gold chunk in the vault. The tasting room includes a huge giftshop where regional items can be found and even a bargain or two. The deli counter servers up half a dozen specialty salads and some well mixed sandwiches, other stuff too, but we liked the picnic feel of the place and enjoyed the grounds with our deli purchases and a bottle of white wine.

This was a complete suprise. We were on our way to the Big Tree Park and had lunch at a Murphys resturant. The waitress suggested Ironstone. We were taken by the place. We were in Napa just a few days before and Ironstone beat them all. The grounds were terrific, the museum and personell were great, and the wine made me a devotee. This would be a destination all by itself!
