“Safer than driving!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2012

After a day of exploring the foothills (and the wineries therein), we decided that it was smarter to stay the night and enjoy the locals... "we'll drive home Sunday". We checked several of the competing hotels. Some were cheaper, and looked ok, but were 'pet friendly'. My wife has asthma, some pets are a really bad thing. So, we settled on the Historic Hotel in Murphys. The main building has been a hotel since the 1850's and is in good shape considering its longevity! The bar is true gold rush, with a pot belly stove for heat and a long brass rail to rest your boots. (It does, however, have a jukebox and a few flat screens for sports.)
Anyway, we checked in at a fairly high rate for the area (about $120) given that the hotel was less than 1/2 full. The room was dark, but very clean. They have worked to upgrade the rooms and other than the carpets and the bathrooms, have done pretty well. The one big surprise was the mattress, IT WAS INCREDIBLE! As good as those in the Westin we love so much. So we mostly got a good night's sleep (I know it is a bit picky, but they have the old wall AC/Heater combos under the front window. Given the cold, it cycled all night trying to keep the room from being an icebox.) One other complaint; when we inquired about the room, we asked about internet connectivity. We were assured that it was up and available. After we checked in, we found that to be untrue. No Internet in the outer rooms... and only spotty connections in the main building. They were "working on it". In my world, that is not cool. When you have a problem, you're up front about it...
Anyway, the big question is, would we return? Maybe. The fantastic bed made up for a lot of shortcomings. And, it was very clean and centrally located. I'm sure they'll eventually get the internet situation corrected... we had a great road trip and intend to do it again soon so... we'll see about a return trip.

So I'm guessing there are nicer, quieter places to stay in town but the Murphys Hotel is very convenient and quaint as heck. HOWEVER, the rooms are not very comfortable-Small bathroom, loud parking lot and the bed was not great. Some drunk fool actually pounded on our door at 2:15 thinking he had his room. GREAT. We had one of the rooms along the walkway which was very noisy until late night. Apparently it's the easiest path from the bar to the rooms on the edge of the parking lot. Whatever, the price was right and the location was great.

Room Tip: Maybe one of the upstairs rooms in the new wing along the edge of the parking lot would be better...

I'ts homey and like visiting an old friend, Centrally located. Motel rooms are a bit spartan for some folks, I suppose. Great bar and histirical rooms and good dining room,

Make this your last option in Murphys. First of all the website photos are a lie. The big historical part and pics of rooms are only a small portion of this hotel. When we checked in we got a room that was no better than a motel 6, actually that would have probably been better, in a "modern" part that was not even attached to the historical building. So here we are thinking we were gonna be staying in a quaint little downtown building, not! We had some loud noisy generator type machine we listened to the whole night. Beds hard as concrete. Carpet nasty dirty. Had to keep the curtains closed or everyone walking by can see you, they didn't have the sheer curtains behind these to get in some sun light. AC worked thank god. Maid service (a 14 yr old boy) which is totally fun except he entered our room twice without waiting for anyone to answer the door and the first time I was naked standing in the bathroom. He came back an hour later and did the same thing. Front desk got an ear full. Over priced, if you want the Murhphy's feel, pick another hotel. Our friends stayed at the Victoria Inn (nice) or there are some B&Bs.

The food was also not that great, we ate at the Grinds the next day.

Room Tip: Historical building rooms have a community bathroom, the "modern" rooms aka motel 6 rooms...

Aug. 17, 2011 - Burger and fries were pretty good, the crab cakes were not. While my girlfriend and I were having a drink at the bar we were advised by Jason, the bartender, a very gracious and professional fellow that food service on The Patio was about to end if we wished to have our lunch outside. We promptly placed our order with Jason, he went outside to secure a table in the shade for us (while we finished our drinks). After seating ourselves on The Patio, a waitress, scowling and appearing pissed off approached our table and said - you're sitting and we're closed! I replied that we had placed our order with Jason and suggested she give a Smile. We were so taken aback by her rudeness that it ruined a perfectly good lunch. I am angry that I invited a visiting friend to have lunch at the Hotel. Money unwell spent; not gonna happen again. we will go elsewhere!

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for our anniversary. There was little to please us about our stay, but the worst part was that the noise from the bar was really bad. We got a particular room (#18) recommended to us at the time we made the reservations because we were told it was farther from the bar and would be quieter. Unfortunately, our room was right over the door where the drunks would come out to smoke and yell at each other. All night long we had cigarette smoke wafting into our room, and we would awaken to whoops and hollers. So you know, this door from the bar area led right out to the lawn between the old hotel and the newer part, so I'm sure the people in the newer section got little sleep also.
Don't expect soft, comfortable beds at this hotel; the beds are far beyond "firm." Maybe "solid" would be a better descriptor. I plopped on the edge of the bed and yelped: the mattress didn't give way at all. We went down to the front desk to ask for more pillows; the clerk was hesitant about giving us any. When I said we only wanted a couple extra, she said she'd bring them up later; they never arrived. The next morning I awoke to the sound of dishes being laid out for breakfast below and had to get up: the bed was too hard to stay in any longer.
On the good side, this hotel is historic. There are displays in the lobby of period books and bottles and fun facts. And every room door has a famous person's name painted on it; presumably, it's the room they stayed in. Ours was the John Crocker room. It was also clean.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

This was my first visit to Murphys and was pleasantly surprised by the number of quaint shops and wine tasting opportunities. Staff at the hotel were friendly and accomodating although when we went down for breakfast on Saturday morning at 9am, they were already backed up trying to seat everyone and take orders. Room was clean and roomy but the beds were less than comfortable - overall paid top dollar for an average room.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Murphys Historic Hotel is the longest continually operated hotel in California. The Hotel was built in 1856 and we try to keep our nine historic rooms as close to that time period as possible. If you are to stay within the Historic Hotel you are without T.V., Phone, A/C, and of course a bathroom... but how often do you get to share a shower down the hall? You may bump into a ghost while enjoying a little piece of history. We also have twenty modern hotel rooms that have been improved more recently with new T.V.'s, Beds, A/C's, and Windows. We do have plans to remodel all bathrooms but Rome wasn't built in a day. We also have a full service restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch, & dinner 365 days a year along with a full service saloon. The Murphys Historic Hotel is also within walking distance to over 20 different wine tasting rooms and our community park. While you are here please let me know how we are doing. We hope to see you soon!Sincerely, Brian ... more   less
