Ephesus is competing in the crowded Castro St. restaurant market against at least two other Med/Greek establishments. They've carved out a nice nice - high quality food, at a reasonable price. The service was excellent, and so was the overall value.
For appetizers, we had the turkish chopped salad and the Greek Fries, both nicely seasoned (fries could be more crisp). For entrees, we had the Lamb Shanks and the Beyti/Lamb. Both were solid 4star dishes. For dessert, they actually had a GF offering (rice pudding) that was also very good.
Beer snob report - a wide selection of Mediterranean bottled beers, plus Sierra Nevada Pale on tap - not bad!
Value was very good - 2 appies, 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine and one beer, $62 + tip.

I am quite impressed with Ephesus. Before Galip and his brother opened shop, the local Turkish cuisine scene in Bay Area was fairly constrained. The issue was that there just was not enough Turks to visit Turkish Restaurants, so the taste of most dishes had to be Americanized to cater to most Americans.

What Ephesus did was to bring very unique and hard to make Turkish dishes, and instead try to build the remaining dishes as authentic as possible. I thought at the time they were crazy, but it worked !!.

There is quite a few dishes here that stand out compared to other Turkish restaurants, the Beyti and the Tripe Soup are among them. The tripe soup is a very difficult dish and Ephesus delivers on it every time. I have had both the Beyti ( the Lamb ) and the Tripe soup on multiple occasions here for a few years now and have never been disappointed.

When visiting this restaurant I would go for the unusual dishes instead of the well known ones , they are all equally good but the special dishes are just very rare to find this coast of US.

My friend and I just wanted a small meal, so we tried the appetizer sampler. Everything was wonderful except the tabouleh, which seemed to have the ratio of bulger wheat and parsley reversed (i.e., way too much parsely). We also tried two desserts (sorry, I don't remember the names & they aren't on the online menu) that were wonderful. One was shredded phylo dough with goat cheese and the other was small puff pastry balls wtih chocolate sauce.

Went for dinner last night and really enjoyed it. There is plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy nice weather. The food was a really good value. Had the lamb and beef gyros. Would have liked a fluffier sanwich bread but the sandwich was good. Hummas appetizer was also good. Loved the downtown area overall with free parking garage to accommodate.

The restaurants in this section of Castro Street are undistinguished-crowded together at street level, noisy, not bad usually but ordinary. Ephesus is the exception- good food, prompt and cordial service, varied choices, and reasonable prices. Hence, a 4 rating over a 3. There were several good vegetarian choices, including my eggplant imam. Definitely worth a return visit.
