“Just love this restaurant”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Every time we travel to the Monterey/Carmel area we take the time to drive to The Whole Enchilada. We love the atmosphere, but especially love the "Crab Enchiladas". There is no word to describe just how delicious these enchiladas are.

“passed by a zillion times and finally got a chance to enjoy it !”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Finally passed by at a time when we were hungry enough for a meal ....... the prices seem a bit on the high side by a few dollars per entree ....... but we split the seafood chimichanga. With the chips and salsa, it was enough for a decent lunch meal for two. Total bill, including a beer and dessert (and tax and tip) came to $40, which is not too bad for lunch ! And, since it was a late lunch, we were still full when dinner time came around .....

As for the food - the chimichanga (two) was crisp without being greasy. The plentiful seafood was in a gooey sauce, hot at first, and had a fresh taste; a squeeze of lemon and dollop of sour cream was enough for added flavor. There was a small side of rice and beans and salad. Since we had already filled up on chips, we didn't need any side orders of starches ......

The entire meal was on one plate and the server was gracious enough to bring two smaller plates for us to split the meal.

We had the churritos for dessert - four churros approx 6" long, vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of dulce de leche. The churros were very good - crisp on the outside, still warm and dusted with cinnamon and sugar; the insides still a bit chewy. They seemed freshly made as opposed to sitting under a heat lamp which leads to doughiness and limpness. They were not too greasy. The dulce de leche was just the right touch to the vanilla ice cream. It's about $7 before tax/tip.

We were glad we had a chance to finally stop and enjoy a nice lunch for a reasonable price !

btw, after your meal, make sure to stop off at the fruit/vegetable market next door. They have AMAZING prices - but be forewarned .... because everything is very FRESH, they will not last very long, so don't overbuy !!

“WOW!!! What an experience!”
Reviewed January 18, 2013 via mobile

Headed to Monterey from San Francisco. My aunt has lived in the area for 25 years and suggested this location because of the amazing margaritas. We encountered more than just amazing margaritas.... the Seven Seas soup is out of this world!!! It was so incredible that on our return back to San Francisco we will stop and each get our own bowl. The Marisco Chimichanga was amazing as well. The owner Rey even stopped by to say hello and ask about our evening. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone driving down Highway 1!!

“Missed the mark, no plans to return”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

To start off, one of the dishes served was incorrect and another was brought to the table chilled, not even close to warm.
The chicken enchilada with mole sauce tasted as though it was made with sweet chocolate. Another from our party commented that the Chile Verde was salty.
The carne asada was more like stew meat than steak.
The refried beans and rice were fair at best, and had an unusual sweet taste.
While seated, every time servers walked by it felt like one’s chair was being “bumped”, but was just a weak floor that transmitted vibration, very annoying.
This wasn’t a good experience.

“Delicious Enchiladas!”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

My husband and I stopped at the Whole Enchilada on the way to Monterey for a late lunch. My husband had been there before so he recommended the crab enchiladas. Wow, I was impressed they were real good.
