“Good sand dabs”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

Can be a long line to get in. No table service, but it's worth the trouble. Inexpensive for what you get

“Try Phil's famous cioppino”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

The cioppino keeps me coming back year after year. The fish and chips are the best. I sorta miss the old one way bridge at Moss Landing (but the new improved 2 way bridge makes it easier to get there. If you are visiting the Monterrey Peninsula stop at Moss Landing to check out the fresh seafood at Phil's.

“Pretty Average Place”
Reviewed September 29, 2013 via mobile

We've gone to Phil's over the years and the experience last week could be our last. It's just OK and the distance from Monterey or just about any other place traversing a very busy highway(2lanes) isn't appealing not is the energy plant nearby. We've seen much better 'wharf' areas like Monterey and the seafood could be better in town.

I had a salty crab Louie and my wife had very greasy fish and chips.

We bought some shrimp from their market and it wasn't great, not even as good as what we later found at a local grocery store.

Places can rest on their laurels or just get a bit lazy and I think that's the case here.

“Lives up to expectations”
Reviewed September 28, 2013 via mobile

We came to Phil's Fish Market and Eatery on our way in to Capitola for the weekend. Heard great things about it and it definitely lived up to the hype for us. We enjoyed clam chowder, halibut tacos, salad and fries. We would have been better to share the tacos, salad and fries. So much food! The tacos could have used a little kick, but it's just a personal preference. They were fabulous. We'll definitely be back!

“Fresh Fish, but Busy!”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

If you have a thing about crowds, Phil's may not be for you. The place was packed on a Sunday evening, and friends told us it was remarkably uncrowded. We got the lobster roll (large and a full plate of fries, coleslaw, extras), fresh fried sardines, and the champagne oysters. The oysters were pricey, but worth every mouthful. Not your standard oysters. The sardines were a dish of 3 large fish (nothing petite here), and served without sides. Beware of small bones, as they can't be avoided. Nice buttery, garlic-y finish. Yes,the lobster in the lobster role is imported from the East Coast, but my husband loves lobster, and this was furnished with big hunks of it, including claw meat. There was actually enough to have shared just this plate, without the other dishes. Good thing we were hungry after a day of kayaking.

We finished with an artichoke cupcake (we were curious) that was surprisingly good, more like apple spice cake than anything else. The chunks of artichoke were not identifiable as such. Nice sour cream icing.

Be prepared to scrounge, swoop, and otherwise fight for a table inside. Outdoor seating, some with a beach view and over Monterey bay. There were whales spouting offshore when we were there, but only a few tables have that view. I could see a problem with wind, out here, though not when we were there.
