Owner description: Blue Ocean Whale Watch is owner operated and has the most unique boat on the bay. Our boat, High Spirits, is a 60ft yacht with plenty of space for you inside and out. We have an observation deck up top which provides a 360 degree view of the bay - a perfect vantage point for taking photos. Our tours depart from Moss Landing Harbor, the heart of the Monterey Bay. Moss Landing is the closest port to the beginning of the Monterey Submarine Canyon - a nutrient rich area that attracts a variety of wildlife. Blue Ocean Whale Watch was created in 2011 and is owned and operated by Captain Jim Davis and Captain/Naturalist Kate Cummings. Both Jim and Kate have a deep respect for the ocean and its inhabitants. They also completely love their job which makes a big difference for the customer's experience. We are excellent wildlife spotters, locating anything and everything that might be hanging out in the Monterey Bay that day - from endangered leatherback sea turtles to blue whales. We also guarantee whale sightings; if you don't see a whale, come back for free until you do. Different whales are in the bay year-round, so there is always something amazing to see. We look forward to welcoming you on board!

What an incredible time, we had 20 Humpback Whales surrounding the boat for the entire trip! High Spirits is a 60 ft. vessel that accommodated the 24 guests on the cruise very comfortably, with the upper and front decks offering a lot of space for photographing and viewing. Captain Jim Davis and Naturalist/Photographer Kate Cummings were not just a pleasure to spend time with, they were equally considerate of all the guests/photographers and most importantly the Whales. Kate had an answer for every question about the animals migrating through Monterey Bay, their habits, their actions and the ecosystem in the Bay. We saw the first Whale after barely getting outside the harbor and spent much of the day surrounded by a dozen or more individuals at a time. It was a lot of fun watching the sea lions follow the whales and dive with them, acting like they are pretty much enamored with these majestic mammals. I can recommend this experience to anyone and everyone.

Having read other reviews we were hopeful of a good trip with Blue Ocean and they definitely didn't disappoint. Their double-decker boat meant that everyone (around 20 of us) could find an outside viewing spot, and there was no jostling or looking over shoulders. Co-owner and naturalist Kate provided an informative commentary, and the captain's local knowledge and excellent lookout meant that we saw a number of humpbacks, including two breaching (a rare treat, apparently), and around 100 Risso's dolphins, as well as a small shark. Sea sickness remedies were handed out beforehand, the boat was well equipped with an honesty bar with drinks, snacks and ginger products, and a toilet. There was a covered viewing area for those who didn't like the cold. Everyone shared a genuine enthusiasm for the ocean and wildlife, and there was no hurry to finish the trip, so we got to spend more time with the dolphins when they reappeared at the end of our time at sea.

Top tips: wrap up warmer than you think you'll need to - windcheaters, gloves and hats wouldn't go amiss. And check out their Facebook page - after every trip Kate posts amazing photos.

Can't recommend them highly enough.

We did our research and decided to go on a whale watch from Moss landing rather than Monterey Bay. You get a 4 hour cruse with more time with the whales. The boat is large and comfortable with inside sitting for most if not everyone. The crew is very friendly and caring of the customers. They are very well educated in the sea life and share there knowledge with you in a genuine way. Very nice people. We had a great day getting close to many whales doing all sorts of activities for us to watch up close. A real fabulous experience. We were between 1 and 2 miles from the inlet/beach right where the boat left so we had a lot of whale time. Definitely recommend them.

We had a great day! Everyday is different, but the crew are so helpful and kind. They truly love and care about ocean life and are excited to share stories and information with you. The boat is 3 stories and comfortable. There is plenty of seating inside. My 78 year old grandmother went and she did fine. There are stairs and they have plenty of snacks and drinks on board, all for $1. If you do not see a whale on your trip, you can come back and go on another tour for free, but I'm sure that is a rare occasion. Their website is great, they post pictures of what they see everyday. It is worth it!

Our trip was postponed from a month ago so we were looking forward to it.This would be our first trip and my husband was nervous about getting seasick. He took two Bonine and I did one, but I really didn't need to. Weather was overcast and grey, but no rain, no wind, and calm waters. We stayed on the top for most of the trip just in case and was alerted to otters, 1 sunfish(cool), 2 Blue Whales and several dolphins playing. Only one of the whales felt like fluking but it was cool to see. I know each trip one has a different experience but I was secretly hoping to see more. Staff was pleasant and there's lots of down time on the way back in. I would do this again but at different month.
