I went there with my wife at a weekend. Really ,I had great time there. The informative lady lead us about different routes.
You should pay 4$ for entrance.
You will find scenic routes for walking.
As, I told you before put it at the bottom of your bucket-list.

“just ok”

A nice walk through varying terrain-not one animal siting even with our binoculars when we were there, thus my review.

“Leave plenty of time, slow down and really see it”

The Elkhorn Slough, not a very attractive name but don't be put off, is a wonderful place to go when you have some time to spend quietly with nature. Several mils of trails wander in and out around the fingers of this estuary which runs seven miles inland from the coast. summer and fall are not the best here. Temperatures can be hot on the dusty trails and the grasses will be dry and brown. Winter and spring are the best months but take a hat no mater when you go and binoculars to observe the 200 or so species of birds that live here or travel through as the slough in on the Pacific flyway. It's also useful to check a tide table before your visit. At low tide the upper reaches of the slough are dark mud flats with out much to see, but at high tide otters and even sharks travel quite a way up the fingers of the slough. It's a thrill to see a sharks dorsal fin slipping by and the boardwalks that go out over the water make viewing easy.

“Great Spot for Bird Watching”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2013

Have walked on the trails and kayaked here. It's a fine place for seeing birds, otters and seals. If you're going for a walk at the reserve, check their hours before driving to the visitor center.

“Elkhorn Slough”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2013

Beautiful place to hike and see birds and other wildlife.
Good spot to find Egrets, Herons and Pelicans, as well as Woodpeckers pecking loudly.
Inland enough to be sunny when the coast is becoming foggy. Friendly and knowledgeable guides to suggest best spots for the birds you are looking for. Binoculars can be borrowed free.
Clean restroom and a nice picnic area.
