“Perfect weather and lots of sea life”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a great little trip on a pontoon boat. They have a captain and a naturalist who take you around the slough and do a great job giving you the history of the area. We saw lots of otters, sea lions, seals and birds. It's about 2 hours and well worth it.

“Had a good time...”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

WE were so exceited to see sea otters for the very first time and some one counted 99 of them. Loads of birds and harbour seals and sea lions...had a great time.
It was hard for the inside people to see every thing, but on a small boat that was to be expected. Did not care for the pushing of the tips for the naturalist, we had four people and paid a lot for the trip, but would still recommend the trip. If you cannot afford the boat, there are places where you can drive to to see the sea otters and seals...

“Amazing wildlife boat trip”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

On our recent first visit to California I booked this safari for myself and my wife and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our two week stay. The safari is on a flat bottomed boat in a very calm estuary or "Slough" so there are no sea sickness concerns to worry about.
We took the 9.15 safari which meant an early start from our hotel in Pacific Grove but it was only 30 minutes drive and the instructions sent were easy to follow and there was plenty of parking at Moss Landing Harbour. We were met there by the Safari team of Captain Yohn and the naturalist guide and were soon boarding the boat with the other guests, donning the lifejackets provided and and leaving the dock. Almost immediately there were sea lions to see and the captain gave information on the boats and ships we were passing.
Once past the harbour mouth and heading in to the Slough we saw a pontoon packed with sea lions and then a raft of sea otters and loads of harbour seals and also lots of different birdlife.
We travelled around four miles up the Slough with both the Captain and the onboard naturalist providing a wealth of information on the animal and birdlife that we were seeing and also on the geography and history of the Slough itself as well as answering questions from the guests.
The Captain made sure that both sides of the boat were able to see everything and take loads of photos.
On our trip we saw over 200 sea lions, over 50 harbour seals and around 40 sea otters and around 40 different types of birds.
Binoculars are available for hire if you do not have your own but the boat gets close enough to get a very good view with the naked eye.
.As on any trip on water it can get cold so please take layers of clothing to wear. We did the trip in mid September and it was cool and misty at Moss Landing but cleared off to warm and sunny as we headed up the Slough but was still misty on our return.
I would highly recommend this safari for anyone with an interest in wildlife as it is a unique experience lasting around two and a half hours with a maximum of around 16 people on each tour. Some of the photos I took on our Safari are attached.
Afterwards we walked around the harbour for lunch at Phils Fish Market which I can also recommend!

“Wildlife extravaganza”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

This is a great introduction to the wildlife of this very special place. The information provided is detailed and fascinating. If you don't have binoculars, you can rent them on board for a couple of bucks--it's well worth it to see the wildlife up close. We followed the safari with a visit to the Elkhorn Slough Estuarine Reserve. There's an informative visitor's center there and an opportunity for some goodnhiking and bird-watching.
