It is always such a pleasant surprise to stumble upon a treasure and the Moss Beach Distillery fits that bill! We luckily spied a roadside sign and followed the winding route to an amazing restaurant perched on the cliffs above the Pacific in a perfect picture. The views from the upper restaurant were beautiful were only topped by the scene from the patio area, complete with fire, on the lower level of the place. Incredible! Then the wonderful food! The portions were large and delicious. It obviously is a favorite for birthdays and special occasions judging by the happy groups around us. All the seafood dishes in our party of four, especially the seafood sliders, surpassed our expectations. What a gem! I would highly recommend a stop at the Moss Beach Distillery. The little town is also very charming.

My girlfriend and I spent our 4th of July evening at the Distillery. What a great find! This was our second visit. This entire trip was specifically planned around dinner at the restaurant. It is not a "5 star" restaurant, but, we thoroughly enjoy the setting, the menu, the view and the outdoor fire-pit seating. We enjoyed the Linguine Di Mare and the Prawn Louie. The linguine is one of the tastiest (and filling) meals I have ever eaten. After dinner we retired to the fire-pit with a glass of port to watch the sunset. Thanks to Joseph, our waiter, who added to the overall experience.

With the recent heat wave in the west and the bay area (end of June,'13) we were looking for a place for dinner on the coast. Our niece was visiting from Chicago and we have been to most of the restaurants in the Half Moon Bay vicinity. The Moss Beach Distillery is just a few miles north perched on a cliff overlooking the pacific.

We have been there for drinks about ten years ago but never for dinner. We gave it a try and were happy we did. The food was very good but not excellent. The service was excellent and the views are excellent. It was a little pricey (about $55 a person for dinner with a round of drinks, a couple of appetizers and no desserts), but you are paying a premium for the location and historical atmosphere.

Built in the twenties it was an restaurant/bar with a hotel during prohibition known as Frank's Place. There is a ghost known as the "Blue Lady" which still frequents the place on occasion. It has been the Distillery for about 30 years that I know of and before that in the early seventies it was a restaurant called the Galway Bay Inn.

Like a lot of the coastal restaurants they have a dog friendly patio area with a fire pit and beautiful view. Check out their info and menu on line and stop in sometime.

My husband, our 4 year-old and I parked at the Fitzgerald Reserve parking lot, explored the tidepools (excellent!), and walked a half-mile through the Monterey Pine forest along the cliffs to the restaurant. We sat bundled in blankets outside on the deck. Great view of the ocean.

The food was decent (fish & chips, a bowl of chowder), but not excellent. It was also expensive. Generous portions. I guess one pays for the setting and plate size.

The restaurant is perched on a cliff above a small cove. It's surrounded by Monterey Pines and a few homes. It has a bit of a run-down decor, which is part of the charm; I half-expected to see some old bootlegger or sea captain swagger through the door. Mellow crowd, even some laid-back dogs.

Tip: Try to snag a few chairs next to the fire pits, and sit outside.

A cool place in gorgeous setting, but expensive and the food wasn't memorable. Was it worth the experience? Definitely. Would I go again? Sure, once more, but it didn't live up to the rave reviews from friends. If you lower your expectations and take it as a special place with Northern California flair, it will be a great treat.

Beautiful location, friendly staff, and wonderful food. Try the spinach salad, it is incredible. There is a ghost story associated with this place and incredible views. Ask for a window table!
