Your taste buds will thank you!!! Shawns is a small off the water establishment that seats a very limited number of diners each night. The menu changes periodically but the options are always truly wonderful. The food is fresh, presented beautifully and truly delicious. Shawn puts an interesting twists on standard entree choices that both surprise and delight. If you are looking for humugous servings, this is not the place for you. Generous servings of salad, soup, and appetizers. The entree plates are European size portions. Treat yourselves to a wonderful evening a Shawns.

Like so many others, I am baffled by the "excellent" reviews. The restaurant is in a storefront...very obsolete and non-descriptive. The menu sounded good. We were given "free appetizers" (if you can call 2 spoons with just a taste). We ordered the abalone appetizer and for $25 we received 1 piece the size of a silver dollar, deep fried and cut into 4 minuscule pie shapes. It was so battered we could hardly taste the abalone. I was shocked! Then we ordered the $9 grilled artichoke app. It was 1/2 of the worlds smallest artichoke. Well...we were in for it now! We ordered the Shepard:s Pie and thought..."now we will get some food in our stomachs". Out came a soup cup sized, individual portion of this dish....$25! Our entire bill was $80 with 2 glasses of wine and we were still hungry! What everyone is raving about is NON-SENSE. Tiny portions of "nouvelle cuisine" is out. I suggest Shawn give some value to his patrons. Pretty small amounts of food for exorbitant prices is outrageous. If you don't mind driving a little north to Cambria, we had a wonderful, mind-blowing, culinary experience at "The Black Cat"...now that was a phenomenal gastronomic event! In Morro Bay try "Giancarlo's"...fantastic!!! Try that, then go back to Shawn's and see what you think. Don't waste your money...you will be sorry and hungry if you do.

We recently were visiting Morro Bay and decided to try this restaurant which was conveniently located near our hotel. We ordered the "special" which was pork bellies, and were told by the server that it came with mashed potatoes and vegetables. When it arrived we were shocked at the small amount of food on the plate - four small slices of pork, a very small pile of mashed potatoes, and about five green beans. The quality of the food was ok, but nothing special. They had provided a small complimentary appie which came on two spoons. We would much rather have had a more generous main course, and no appie! We will not be back next time we are in town.

We ate at Shawn's two nights in a row during our stay in Morro Bay. They are only open 5 days a week so plan accordingly. We really love seafood but so many of the waterfront restaurants were the typical fried fish and we just aren't into that. What a great find Shawn's was.

It's a husband and wife operation and very intimate and cozy. You can actually hear yourself talk in the restaurant. The food was absolutely amazing, especially the first night we were there. Don't worry about dressing up or anything like that. Morro Bay is laid back and there is no pretense...a good thing.

So, the food....the first night we had the special, which was Ono, grilled with an herb berre blanc and fresh veggies and brown rice. Absolutely, positively fantastic. If the chef has a special, go for it! We were started with a nice amuse bouche, which was a gazpacho with smoked albacore...definitely a yummy surprise.

My appetizer was the grilled artichoke with chipotle aioli. Do yourself a favor and order this appetizer...better yet, order two. This is amazing and it was what brought us back the second night. My husband had a great salad with baby greens, blue cheese, grapes, and walnuts.

The wine list was nice and we enjoyed two glasses each of Central Coast wines. I had the Victor Hugo Viognier and husband had the 4 Vines Zinfandel. Each glass was $8 so a very good deal.

The total bill was $85 which I cannot complain about at all!

The second night was not quite as good because we didn't do the special, which was Ono again. We really should have gone with our instinct because we love fish. Oh well, it was still good. Husband got the ribs and they were cooked well but could have used more flavor. The root vegetable mash that came with the ribs was very good, as well as the green bean side he ordered.

I wasn't in the mood for a main course so I had a nice salad of Romaine, corn, black beans, cojita and artichoke. I paired that with the calamari appetizer, which was really good and definitely unusually prepared, in a good way! It was pounded flat and then cut into long strips. No tiny little pieces deep fried to death. It was served with a really good sauce too.

Service was awesome even though it was just one person (the Chef's wife, I believe) and the prices were great for the quality of food. This is not your typical tourist joint (thank goodness!) and you should definitely check it out if you're in Morro Bay.
