“Bare bone sushi joint, they don't have fancy decor or seating but sushi is nice and fresh!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013 via mobile

The two waitresses are trying thier best but they were overwhelmed even though this is a small restaurant. The decoration is almost none existence. They can certainly put some efforts into making their restaurant to have more atmosphere and flare.

“This place is an unpretentious solid gem.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

Was driving on Rt 60 and did a search with my iPhone. This place came up. This place has authentic japanese charm. Decor is very average but the sushi is very solid. The Hamachi Sashimi was top notch as were the other items I ordered. Oshitashi cold spinach dish was fantastic. The sushi chef at the bar is super sweet and friendly and speaks his traditional japanese pleasantries to you as he puts each piece on your plate. Definitely worth checking out.

“Favorite Local Sushi Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

Only ten minutes from home. Who needs to go to LA or Pasadena for great sushi? The restaurant is small. Just a few booths, a few tables, and the sushi bar. I always get the tempura dinner that includes miso soup, sticky rice, and a salad that comes with a dressing that is so yummy. My partner always orders a second helping of the sushi. There is another sushi place next door that we haven't visited. We've never been disappointed with Taihei so we keep going back.

“Best Sushi in Monterey Park area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

I love this place. Nakamura-san is the best. By far the best sushi place in Monterey Park. Sit at the bar. You will love it.

“Worthwhile if you are a sushi fan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

I was surprised to find this restaurant in the neighborhood. I stay in a local hotel for business and was dropping off dry cleaning next door, so decided to try it. I've been back several times.

The restaurant itself is quite small with regular tables and a sushi bar. I go for the sushi bar and order my usual - spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail and egg. All very fresh and very good, every time. The sushi chef speaks limited English but is excellent at preparation and does it very quickly. However, last time, decided to try the sweet shrimp but due to miscommunication, for which I take responsibility, ended up with the sweet shrimp and fried shrimp head. Decided to try it and definitely not my thing but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be great for others.

If you do have a fair amount of food, the bill can easily add up to about $35+. However, the product is fresh and well prepared, so worth the cost. Of course, the best sushi I ever had was at 6 am in Tokyo after checking out the fish auction, but this is on the other side of the pacific in a small restaurant off of hwy 60.
