“Best hotel of our californian tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2006

This is a belated review, but I wanted to say how much we loved Casa Munras. We are English and travelled around CA for three weeks in August of 2006. Casa Munras was far and way the best. hotel we stayed at. Small, individual; location and reception service were good. ,beds, pillows and duvets were sensational. Pool, very pretty, nice extras. Our room, though very attractive, was in the corner of a square, dark, but we didn't intend to spend much time in the room, apart from sleeping, so it didn't matter to us . The TV also didn't face the beds, but it was no great hardship having our teenage kids move chairs in front of the TV. Maidservice the only problem. Generally unpleasant, surly. The first day, my two lazyy teenage children (14 and 17) were sleeping in the first morning (approx. 9am) and the maids entered the room and cleaned around my kids! My kids were shocke but didn't know what to do or say! An absolute no no!! If it hadn't had been for the rest or the hotel's many good points I would have gone beserk.

  • Liked — fabulous beds and bedding
  • Disliked — maid service
  • Tips/Secrets — don't accept room on ground floor in corner of score, next to housemaids room

Deep discount on a deluxe fireplace room through Sherman's Travel Newsletter. Charming room, excellent service, short walk to shops on Alvarado St. and Fisherman's Wharf. Super-comfy bed, room was delightfully appointed in a French/country style. I would definitely stay here again!

  • Liked — charming rooms, proximity to attractions
  • Disliked — a few homeless folks panhandling in the neighborhood
  • Tips/Secrets — check for discounts through travel newsletters

Please be aware of an issue that occured twice during our check in process. We arrived and were checked in to a room but the check in staff were unsure if the room had been cleaned and so went to check. When the check in guy came back he told us that the room was still occupied. We were then checked in to another room and given the keys. When we went in to this new room, due to the handbag and lap top on the bed, along with personal effects in the bathroom, it was apparant this room was also occupied. We were appalled to have been given room keys to someone else's room and were really conerned at the complete disregard for people's safety and security. If we have not pre paid we would not have stayed.
The Manager was very appologetic and assured us that this not happpened before - ?
Endless sagas later ( one noisy tiny room and the promise of a suite, which did not materialise. We ended up with an upgrade and a $50 credit at the bar )
More negative points - very noisy plumbing - if anyone near you uses the shower or sink you know about it . Also get a room on the first floor - or anyone walking around above you sounds like a herd of elephants charging across the ceiling .Try and avoid staying in the standard size rooms - not enough room to swing a cat.
Positive points. Very comfortable bed. Great selection for breakfast ( cereals, fruit, muffins, toast, bagals, juice and coffee) which is included in the room rate.

We live in the Bay Area so we have visited Monterey quite a few times. Our favorite hotel, Hotel Pacific, was completely booked due to the Monterey Jazz Festival and we really wanted to see the great white at the aquarium so after much research we decided on Casa Munras.

Pros: decent bar/restaurant with small plates, decent complimentary continental breakfast, close to downtown Monterey and walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, comfy bed (must be new), child friendly

Cons: looks like a motel, our room smelled of mold (scary), old bathrooms with no ventilation that were VERY uninviting, construction on the grounds which we were never made aware of, over 2 miles walking distance from the aquarium.

At just over $200 per night this was NOT a good value. We are not very particular and have an infant child so really were looking more for a comfortable hotel for our family, but were very disappointed. Overall, if they charged more like $100-$125 per night would have been a better value.

  • Liked — Comfortable bed, good location, child friendly
  • Disliked — moldy smell in room, uninviting bathroom
  • Tips/Secrets — Try to get a good rate or don't visit this hotel!

Our rooms were definitely very small but clean and comfortable, and had DVD players connected to the tvs. The bathrooms were tiny and not ventilated. No full-length mirrors to be found. Staff were quite gracious and friendly. We had the pool to ourselves, and it was heated to a perfect temperature although we missed having a hot tub or jacuzzi. We decided to take a chance in the hotel restaurant, and even though it was completely deserted, we ended up with a decent (i.e. overall slightly better than our expectations of mediocrity) meal that was not as overpriced as most hotel restaurants are. The free breakfast had a pretty good selection for a continental breakfast. I wouldn't have wanted to pay more than the $100 we paid on Priceline.

This hotel is overrated. Although rooms are great, they are very noisy. The staff was not that friendly and sort of arrogant
Not a very good experience
