It may be pricey, but you get value for that money. The restaurant is better than most of the restaurants in town, and you're eating on a deck over the ocean. You're 15 minutes walk from Fisherman's Wharf in one direction, and from the whole of Cannery Row in the other.
The staff are all friendly and helpful, and the only sound at night is the surf of the Pacific Ocean and the occasional seal barking at... I don't know what.
Business brought me to the area, but now I've stayed I'd actually consider making a special trip to come back here.

The Monterey Plaza Hotel was just great. However, I have to say that having a Bay view really made it. We could watch otters playing in the bay, people scuba diving, kayaking, birds, etc. Had a great view of the whole bay. Part of the view as made possible by having the "suite" which was the two rooms that connected (1201 and 1202). 1201 was best as it had corner window to bay and 1202 had ocean view, but other window looked at The Chart House. The restaurant in the Hotel was also had very good food. The little La Strada coffee place had great breakfast burritos and paninis and Peet's coffee. We rented bikes and rode all the way down past Asilomar and Carmel and back for about a 3 hr ride. Fantastic route and views. We also did the Aquarium that day and it was great as always. One of our all time favorite "museums". My wife and I hadn't been for 20 years, but still great. Kids loved it. The Big Sur drive was nice as always, but really Point Lobos was the highpoint. I would spend more time there if we went back. It really has everything…trails, ocean, big rocks, hiking…and close to Monterey and Carmel.

We had an ocean view room to watch the ever-changing waterfront scenes. Service was superb from Schooners Restaurant to housekeeping. Each person tried to be helpful and made our stay comfortable. The hotel is in walking distance to the aquarium. It is also a short drive to Carmel. We enjoyed the peaceful location after a busy day. Amazing that the hotel is so convenient to sights, but it is able to maintain the quiet, peaceful mood. Sit by the water on the comfortable patio as you enjoy a snack! Will most definitely return!

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are worth it!

The hotel is beautiful----Large open entry area, great patio overlooking Monterey Bay, and staff members everywhere wanting to assist you, direct you or answer questions. From the time you drive into the valet parking area to the time you enter the room, you will be greeted by the valet, the concierge, the front desk clerk and the bellman.

The hotel has some decent places to eat for a price----a Mai Tai is about $13, although it was an excellent Mai Tai. The food is pretty pricey.

Our room faced Cannery Row, and it was easy to observe the goings on of tourists and shopkeepers until well into the evening. The hotel is right in the middle of it all----walking distance to the Monterey Aquarium and all the sites along Cannery Row. Naturally you are a stones throw to the bay.

I would rate our room as just OK. I've seen many exactly like it at Marriott, Best Western, etc. I suspect they have much fancier rooms with the ocean views which are more worthy of the fanfare you get when you arrive, but we were staying in one of the more cheaper rooms.

In a nutshell, this is a great choice for the honeymooners or the folks where cost is no issue. For the budget traveler, there are other less expensive options that are still close to Monterey Bay and where you can enjoy the sites without going over budget.

Being from the East coast, a visit to the Monterey peninsula has been on my bucket list for many years. The Monterey Plaza did not disappoint. Even though it is on Cannery Row, we found the hotel very peaceful and subdued. Perhaps late June is not crowded due to damp, chilly weather. However, the weather was remarkably good. Our ocean view king room literally, was right over top the water. The room was quite spacious, by hotel standards. Don't think a balcony is necessary since there are lovely places to sit outside by the Cafe Strada, that have nice fire-pits. The room was elegantly decorated and very clean, especially the bathroom. I especially liked the vanity area outside the bathroom. What a plus! The only constructive comments I have are the tv and parking. The tv reception was pretty bad. The tv only offered standard definition, and some channels were very snowy. The hotel should move toward hi-def or satellite. The hotel only has valet parking. Though the valets were very nice, it was very cumbersome trying to get your vehicle. The valet area outside the lobby entrance is very tight, especially in the morning when guests are either checking out or getting ready to depart for the day. If you are returning in the afternoon, and going back out for the evening, it is easier to park on the street. Other than those two items, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff was most professional and gracious. Comparative to what city hotels cost, this was an excellent value for the money.

Room Tip: Would definitely recommend ocean view room, though balcony is not necessary.
