Great hotel in a great location!! First class all the way right on Monterey Bay. Beautiful hotel and spa with two roof top jacuzzi spa's, steam room and sauna. Great breakfast in the morning too. We didn't have time, but you can rent kayaks and put them in and kayak to the seals swimming out the back in Monterey Bay. Next time we will be doing that!

Room Tip: Any room in this hotel facing the water is good! You may get a little noise if you leave the window...

One of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed at. Just gorgeous. We didn't want to leave. The bar and restaurant are good too. The bed was so comfortable. I just want to go back. Vacation destination to the max. So happy we decided not to stay right on Cannery Row near all the noise. It was so serene to listen to the waves crashing the shore. We never closed our patio door. Just book here. You won't be disappointed.

My husband and I stayed here at the beginning of July. We were thrilled with the view from our room, I watched otters play in the ocean right in front of us, and at dinner 2 dolphins were swimming right in perfect view. The binoculars are a nice touch. The food at the restaurant was very good, and the hot tubs on the roof top were a wonderful treat in the evening. Perfect walking distance to Cannery Row and the Fisherman's Wharf! I highly recommend this hotel!

We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The room was very comfortable, overlooking the ocean. We loved hearing the ocean from our room. The bed was very comfortable and clean. Would definitely return. The restaurant food was good but expensive, as was everything in Monterey.

Room Tip: Any room w an ocean view. We actually had a corner room but could see the water and hear the waves.

We recently stayed at the Monterey Plaza for our 40th anniversary. Our room was very nice, wil awesome views. The staff was friendly and helpful. Really enjoyed the food and drinks at the restaurant. We always ate on the patio and enjoyed the view. The spa was very nice although overpriced compared to other fine resorts we've been to.

I highly recommend this hotel for a special occasion. There were 2 weddings while we were there, what a perfect setting. The only reason I didn't rate this hotel 5 stars was I didn't feel they went above and beyond. Everyone there knew it was our 40th anniversary as they mentioned it several times, but it would have been nice to have a bottle of wine or coupon for a free desert or even a congratulations card in our room upon check in. Other hotels we have stayed at have acknowledged a special occasion. Also, we got in a little after midnight due to flight delays and the bar was already closed. We really wanted a glass of wine so thought we'd call the 24 hour room service only to find they couldn't bring alcohol after the bar closed. A little disappointing after a long trip.

Room Tip: Requesting a water view is a must!

Old world charm, great staff and wonderful proximity to Aquarium and downtown. Beautiful lobby, spacious suites, all the amenities you would expect. Outside is a great gathering area complete with fireplace to keep you warm as you talk and watch the sea. Look forward to returning!

The Plaza is a member of the Woodside hotel group, which promotes a "distinguished, gracious" and "elegant" experience, "capturing the ... sophistication of the California lifestyle." Unfortunately, in our recent experience, the only aspect of the hotel that even approached this standard was the staff. The front desk, bell and housekeeping staff were helpful, friendly and service-oriented, and the valet staff were at the top of their game, going above and beyond expectations many times and generally performing at a very high level.

However, the other aspects of our experience ranged from disappointing to awful. On the disappointing end were the rooms and the food. We had a king ocean-view room with a balcony. The room itself was clean and spacious and the bed comfortable, but the decor, featuring heavy wood furnishings and dreary yellow walls, was dated. Upon arrival we stopped at the restaurant for a casual lunch, but we cut it short after sampling a dozen oysters, presented in their shells but drained of their juices, and the fried calamari, which had the texture and taste of cardboard. Some patrons apparently liked the drinks, though, because from mid-afternoon late into the night we heard screaming (literally: aaaaaeeeeaaaahhh) from the bar.

We could have overlooked the decor, certainly, and we weren't there for the food. The absolute deal-killer was that while guests must sign pledges not to smoke in the rooms, **the property is not non-smoking!** It has been so long that we've stayed anywhere that invited on-property smoking that we never thought to inquire in advance. Big mistake. The first day a man sat outside our balcony chain-smoking cigars. When the smell in our room became too much, not realizing that smoking is allowed, we called the front desk. They sent someone out to reseat the cigar smoker a few seats down, but he was promptly replaced by a group of chain-smokers with cigarettes. Those folks were gone when we returned from dinner but they were replaced by two others, who brought along their beer cooler in addition to their cigarettes and stayed all night. And so it went for 3 days.

If you enjoy the hawkers-and-souvenir-store atmosphere of Cannery Row, don't mind secondhand smoke in your room and find the late-night revels of others energizing, or if you don't visit for the view and are happy with a room not facing the water (probably quieter and less likely to take on smoke), you may find this property entirely suitable. As noted, the staff was excellent. If, like us, you seek fresh air and a tranquil retreat from which to contemplate the wonders of the bay, this is an ill-advised choice. I am ranking the property so low because, after reflection, I don't think our expectations were out of line with the marketing. If we return to the area we will stay at a smaller, non-smoking inn in nearby Carmel that is not on the water, but to which we fled for respite from the Plaza.

Room Tip: Ocean-view rooms have great views, but those sensitive to smoke will have to keep their balcony door...

Dear Heather,

Thank you for taking the time to share your valuable feedback following your recent visit. Your comments regarding food have been addressed.

Please accept my sincere apology for the inconvenience and unpleasantness regarding the cigarette and cigar smoke. We do have a non-smoking policy for the interior of the hotel and take the policy very seriously and enforce it to the best of our ability. However, the outside area which includes the lower terrace and upper plaza is considered public property and smokers do have the right to smoke outside of our property given it is considered “public access” per the California Coastal Commission. We do attempt via hotel security to control smoking throughout the area we have no real authority. We do however maintain. While we do get a few complaints from our guests regarding excessive smoke odor and we do our best to control.

If you could please contact me directly, I would appreciate a personal conversation. I can be reached by phone at 831-645-4000 or by e-mail at jnarigi@montereyplazahotel.com.
