“Nice location”
Reviewed August 26, 2010

Nice location in Monterey. We booked on a weekend when there was an event happening so things were busy. Check in/out was easy and staff was helpful. Noise from rooms next door was noticeable. Breakfast was what you expect. Free wifi. Rooms were clean. A basic place to sleep while traveling. Underground parking was a tight fit but free.

On arrival at this hotel after travelling extensively throughout California,Nevada and Arizona over a 3 week period with my husband and 14 year old daughter we were greeted by a bombastic individual who expected the 3 of us to stop for 2 nights in one bed.!!! .He had a disgusting attitude and only after I remonstrated with him he agreed to provide a rollaway bed at an extra cost of 12 dollars. I had already prepaid the equivalent of $140 per night which was the most costly accomodation throughout our stay and by far the worst. The only reason I can see why this hotel is popular is its close proximity to Monterey harbour and nothing else. The breakfast was a survival of the fittest with 12 places to sit ..for 140 rooms so you had to take it back to the poky rooms in order to eat .It is also next to a gas station and extremely noisy, the bathroom fan sounded like a freight train and the shower wailed like a banshee....After our brilliant experience with other hotels this totally spoilt our holiday....Oh and did I mention that someone set the fire alarm off at 6 oclock in the morning and the internet service kept cutting out it was slower than an asthmatic ant carrying 2 very heavy bags of shopping.....Avoid at all costs..

Many of our reservations are made on Brand.com like this one was. We reserved the room type the guest booked and accomodated their need for an extra bed for their child. We actually gave them a rollaway bed complimentary just to help. Our central location truly speaks for itself. You can literally walk to over 40+ restaurants within 4 blocks. The beach is 4 blocks away
and Fisherman's Wharf is 12 minutes away. At breakfast, which is an expanded continental
breakfast, we have sitting for 12 inside and 12 for sitting outside. We have brand new refurbished rooms. .

I want to be fair to this motel, there is no doubt the locaton is great, you can walk to so many things or catch the "Wave" bus nearby and go to even further places. The underground parking was great, and I didn't drive my car two out of the four days I was there. I read the reviews on the motel prior to arrival (but after I got this motel via priceline) so I didn't pick as much as it picked my price. Checkin was easy but the male clerk working said to someone on the phone how busy it was getting as everyone was checking in (I was the only one in line so I was bit surprised by that.) The room was small but clean and all that was needed. There is a safe in the room which is a nice added touch. The showers are fine but the shower head was too low (I am only 5' 8") and the water coming out hit me in the back. There are some easy fixes, I hope the managment will look at to improve this area. As for quiet, I was not concerned about the outside noise, I read the previous reviews and the double pane window comments. Where I can tell you there is an issue, is the ability to hear conversations easily between two rooms. One side of my room was quiet (based on design of building). However, there was a pass through to the other room, which while secure, let in anything that happened. That is the one area noise wise, that should be fixed or rectified as best as possible, I noted I could see into the other room, if I opened my side of the pass through and that told me all that I needed to know why I could hear things so easily. The staff is friendly and the stay was pleasant. I recommend the hotel below but people just need to know the issues. You gain convenience but sacrifice privacy, so choose as to your needs.

Yes, this hotel was cheap, BUT SO NOISY!

The windows were very poorly sealed so you could hear all the traffic on the intersection and 2 gas stations outside. The air con was so loud you couldn't have it on at night, and to make everything worse, the door timber was so warped it did not fit in the hole properly, and allowed cold air (and noise) in all night. I noticed loads of doors like this on our floor, I don't know why people have not complained before!

P.S. the 'high speed internet' is slower than dial up, even with full signal!

Thank you for taking the time to review the
property. Taking your points one at a time....
all windows in all rooms are double-paned and resealed regularly for energy conservation purposes. To the casual observer we are very obviously at a central
location in Monterey, walking distance to
40+ restaurants, the beach and Fisherman's
Wharf. It seems your issue was noise and
fortunately the traffic in Monterey tends to die
down after 9 p.m.We do have a 24 hr desk
and all new rooms. In the months when there is rain our wood doors sometimes swell with the weather change. It is a temporary condition.

The wi-fi enjoys the highest speed available
from AT&T at 6 mgs.We have a Cisco distribution system Sometimes the internet
can be slower at high traffic hours but that is
certainly only once in a while.

This motel is sandwiched between 2 major roads. If you are a light-sleeper, ask for a quiet room. You'll probably get a room in the middle of the building away from the streets but you'll still hear a bit of the traffic. The noise is very minimal. The room is standard on the small side. Ample underground parking. Location of the motel is central and is quick easy drive to the aquarium, Pacific Grove and Carmel. The breakfast was good except for the coffee. It was very diluted and tasteless. They also ran out of regular coffee pouch for the rooms (only decaf). We had to walk to Peets which is only a block away. Trader Joe's is next to Peets, so it's convenient to pick up some snacks there. If you're on a budget, this motel is a good place to stay.

Thank you for your comments. We are the
closest economy-priced and "branded" lodge
to downtown Monterey, Fisherman's Wharf
Monterey Beach and Dennis the Menace Park.
Our coffee/decaf/tea is available in the lobby
24 hrs/day. The coffee is a Nescafe brand
that gets favorable reviews from many of our customers. Pete'sCoffee, Trader Joe's and Erik's Deli are one block away providing 3 of the 40 plus restaurant choices within 4 blocks. We do have double-paned windows and the noise level is low after dark.

Though not directly in the nicest part of downtown, we could walk from the hotel to all the attractions in Monterey. The room was very nice, and clean. We had a corner room and could hear traffic on the street throughout the night. This wasn't bothersome to us- we live in NYC, but it might be if you're used to the quiet.

The hotel had free internet, coffee and cereal out all day, had a fridge and microwave in the room. It was right next to a gas station and across the street from a Denny's. The neighborhood wasn't bad, but wasn't an attraction either.

For its proximity to Monterey attractions and including parking and a decent room, it was a very good price.

My wife and I have stayed at the Downtown Monterey Travelodge twice - in December of last year, and May last spring. We plan to stay there again soon in early December this year to experience the "Christmas In The Adobes" event. This will be our second time at the "Adobes" event, where there are beautiful candlelit Adobes, lots of music and entertainment, great good, and some unique Christmas gift possibilities. (The Adobes are an easy walk from the Downtown Travelodge.)

We have found the Travelodge to be probably the most centrally located and reasonably priced "budget" lodging in Monterey - especially if you want easy access to the downtown. Not fancy or frilly but clean and modern and very well maintained, with all the basic requirements that make for a good stay. Our room seemed recently renovated, bed was firm and felt new, everything was spotless and super clean. Nice bathroom and shower with plenty of hot water. Hair dryer, coffee maker and other conveniences.

During our visit last May, we brought our bikes with us on the back of the vehicle on a lockable rack. We used the hotel as a base of operations as we walked and biked around Monterey, Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row (there is a great bike path from downtown Monterey to Cannery Row to Pacific Grove). Many people walk or bike on this "dual use" path as did we on our visit. We also transported our bikes to Carmel and tried riding around Carmel for a while - which is actually more difficult to do and not recommended! Best to walk in Carmel! Save your bike for the Monterey bike path!

I might add that the staff at the Travelodge property were excellent. It is family owned and managed and you can tell that there is great attention to details. Last visit in May, we had a good conversation with the owner and general manager, Craig, who is a great guy. He seems to be very active and hands on in managing the property and he is a Monterey expert and I believe grew up there. We recently were able to get him on the phone when we were making reservations for our upcoming December visit. He gave us some tips in connection with our stay during the upcoming Christmas In The Adobes. He has been our best tour guide for Monterey so far!

One thing I should mention: I saw some comments about street noise. Though the motel is located near a busy intersection and though we found there to be some general typical street noise, our rooms have been amazingly quiet during both stays - this was not an issue for us.

In closing, you can't go wrong staying here. A good, clean, well run motel, with all the basic features a traveler needs.
