I've stayed at nicer hotels, but I have definitely stayed at worse. This was the cheapest hotel we found online. Didn't have high expectations when we arrived, but everything turned out fine. The room was small, and very muggy. No ventilation AT ALL, not even a fan in the bathroom. But it was only a fifteen minute walk from the Wharf, and twenty minutes from Cannery Row and the Aquarium. With free parking we left our car at the Hotel the entire time and walked everywhere we wanted to go. Had a wonderful time. The hotel staff was pleasant and helpful. The rooms were clean, except for some mold around the bathroom shower stall. Biggest complaints are the lack of ventilation, the high pitch whistle that the shower head made, and the city bed tax that no one told us about until it showed up on the bill. All in all had a good stay. The room was inexpensive and had no amenities, but it served its purpose of providing us a place to sleep at night.

Our rooms have all brand new furniture, carpeting, bedding and curtains. We have
newer Amana air conditioner/heaters and they
provide excellent ventilation. We have double-paned windows to help with warmer and cooler weather. We checked the room for overall cleanliness and found no problems.
We score consistently high on Travelodge's
GX+ score (developed by JD Powers and
Associates). It is a completely guest scored system and we are in the top 25 Travelodge properties nationwide. By the way, bed (transient) taxes are regularly charged by cities throughout California and U.S..
Nowadays you will see tourism assessments too and for an economy lodge in Monterey the cost is .50 per room per day.

My husband and I stayed here over a weekend. I picked this hotel because a) it was cheaper than most Monterey accomodations b) it stated on the website that the rooms had been updated and the pictures did look quite nice and clean.
WEll we got a room alright BUT it did not lookl ike the rooms on the website pictures. I guess we got a room they did not get around to fixing up. It had the old style bedspread on them. The mattress was also not comfortable, and if it was new, it did not seem like it. With two people on the bed you constantly feel like the middle is caving in.
Now, having said all that, at the end of the day, we did not spend much time in the room, we spent it sight seeing and it really was just a place to sleep!
The plus side was that there is breakfast available and I am a cereal person so they provide that in addition to toast, bagels and such..
It was also close to the fishermans wharf and downtown shops, plazas, lots of restaurants here and there.

36 of our 51 rooms have the newer duvet
queen bed topping with exposed pillows.
15 of our 51 rooms have a queen bedspread
designed to go with the curtains and new carpeting. The desks in these particular
15 rooms are 52" long

All rooms have new furniture, new Simmons Pillow Top beds, new tile floors in the bathroom, new Amana air conditioners,
new lamps, wall art, coved carpeting, and
chairs with an ottoman. There are plentiful,
easy-to- access electrical outlets right on top
of each desk for your cell phones and computers. We have free Wi-Fi, free Continental breakfast and free parking.

We are the only economy-priced lodging in
downtown Monterey and most of the hotels
close to us charge for breakfast and parking.

I think everybody who has reviewed this so far needs to remember that it is not a 5 star hotel. It wasn't too basic though.
I stayed here for one night after arriving into San Francisco airport before going onto a music course in Carmel Valley. In actual fact i liked staying here. The staff on the desk were helpful and friendly, gave me a map and pointed me in the direction of shops, etc.
Lift to floors saved my travel weary legs and my room was clean and comfortable, with luxurious looking and feeling bed and pillows. The room had lots of local information and coffee (no tea for British tea lovers, like me, but that was ok) and wasnt too small or anything. Good shower (little low shower head maybe) and everything worked. If the hairdryer doesnt work - you havnt read the sign which says the bathroom switch must be on before it'll work - the staff will tell you if you ask!
The only thing is that is you have a room on the road side, it may be a little noisy as you can hear the traffic as long as there is any (not roaring, but its a main road).

Only about ten mins walk down to Fisherman's wharf from here and lots of shops on the way. Bus station/plaza very close.

Breakfast in the morning was very nice - continental choices, including pastries and bagels, TEA (!) juice, cereal, etc, all looking fresh and good. Not sure if quite a lot of people came to breakfast at the same time whether there'd be enough places to sit mind you. There was also a computer at reception you can use.

We spent four great nights at the Downtown Monterey Travelodge in January. Weather was sunny and perfect - higher temps than usual for late January. Our room was super clean and super quiet. Bed was very comfortable - seemed brand new. Shower was great - plenty of hot water - clean fresh new towels - TV worked great - heater and air conditioner were flawless ... in-room coffee maker was convenient. In other words all the basic yet important amenities that you expect to work did indeed work perfectly! And this hotel is so centrally located. Easy driving distance to Aquarium, Carmel, Pacific Grove, Cannery Row, etc. Walking distance to downtown Monterey - there is even a brand new Trader Joe's a few short blocks away (next door to a Peet's coffee!). We found this to be super convenient if we wanted to grab some apples or juice or sandwich or wine or whatever and bring it back to our room. Another thing we appreciated was the complimentary continental breakfast in the hotel lobby - this helped us get out the door efficiently when we wanted to get an early start - without having to take the time and expense to deal with restaurants. (But if we wanted to eat breakfast out, there are a number of restaurants within walking distance, ranging from a Denny's to upscale.) In summary: we've stayed at this Downtown Travelodge twice in the past. We love the central location and and can't over-emphasize how clean and well maintained our rooms have always been. All in all, a great value!

boiled eggs, fresh fruit and more. You can

Our pool is heated at 81 degrees in season.

Free wi-fi, free business center with printing
and a very experienced, friendly front desk staff.

The room seamed dirty and shabby with a strange odour. The hairdryer did´nt work and it was really cold at night. The bed was ok and the complimentary breakfast was nice, otherwise I should have rated the hotel one point!

I apologize that your stay at the Monterey Downtown Travelodge did not meet your expectations during your trip to historic, downtown Monterey. In later April of 2009, we have completed an upgrade of all new carpeting, furniture, lamps, artwork, and curtains in our 100% non-smoking property.
The upgrade did take 6 weeks and is now complete. I apologize for the inconvenience
and hope you will give the Monterey Downtown Travelodge another opportunity to better serve on your next visit to Monterey.

Perhaps it was just good timing - rooms had all just been refitted - but we were really impressed by this Travelodge. Comfortable room and a brand new springy bed. Breakfast was included and was buffet style. Great price and just round the corner from some very good restaurants! Just one word of caution, soundproofing between rooms could be improved.

Thank you for noticing the first of our new,
professionally designed rooms. Our Simmons Pillowtop beds have been in place
for several years. Our price tends to be affordable for Downtown Monterey and there are over 40+ restaurants within 3 blocks.
The ability to take a short to downtown, historic Monterey is what helps make us unique.
