“You are paying top dollar for an undesirable location”
Reviewed June 30, 2009

Thought the rooms are very nice, and management may be doing their best w/what they have, don't expect what you'd usually get for this price. Our 2 night stay cost more than $550 once we paid parking (a necessity). The hotel is sandwiched in a group of buildings. Our room was directly over a crowded tourist street (close enough that you couldn't see the sidewalk on the hotel side). Our view consisted of the requisite Tshirt and chocolate shops across the street (think Jersey Shore!) -- not the ocean as per the picture. We were awakened at 6am with a very noisy city trash pickup.. AND IT WAS SUNDAY! Lots of souped up cars and motorcycles (ie not just normal car noise) driving by and plenty of tourists yakking. The breakfast was nicely served to your room, but was not fancy.

This is a lovely lovely hotel with excellent people working there. The room was immaculate and the feather-top bed was heavenly. There is a gas-start wood-burning fireplace so you could have the real ambiance of wood without the hassle of working hard to start it. Every request that the hotel could accomodate they did. We had a room facing the bay and every morning we watched the otters play in the water and seals bask on the rocks while we ate breakfast. One day a seal even climbed up onto the beach at the base of the hotel and stayed there all day!
There were small tiny inconsistencies in the service - just stuff we noticed, nothing that made our stay there any worse. They have water conservation in place, which is great! We probably did not help with forest conservation by having the wood fires, but the room was too romantic not to indulge in that. The continental breakfast served in your room there was a little bland after having pretty much the same stuff after a few days but there are choices and the quality was good. Plenty of hot coffee!
One day there were loud children there, but all other days it was very quiet, we either had nice quiet neighbors or good soundproofing.
Recommendation for food -- go off Cannery Row and explore -- just a couple of streets up the hill there are some wonderful places that don't do the usual chowder/seafood fare of Cannery Row. One night we ate at the Bistro Moulin (I think it was called) which had lovely French food. Another night we ate at the Persian Grill which had knowledgable staff who are proud of their culture and are happy to share stories/history behind the food.

Lovely hotel --- friendly and helpful staff, beautifully maintained rooms. A bit pricey for what you get however (no car park, no pool). Cannery Row is hugely over-rated as a location -- so I'd personally recommend looking around for something a little cheaper further out of town. You're paying a premium for location here -- and if the "Bubba Gump Shrimp" restaurant is not your idea of high culture, you'll be disappointed at a once beautiful bay that's been massacred by the local tourist industry. None of this is the Spindrift's fault, but its location doesn't justify the price premium the hotel thinks that it does. For half the price, this would be a superb place to stay.

We booked the suite on the first floor in June for $379 for Friday / Sunday night and $400 for the sat night. We were not disappointed. The view was spectacular, right on the beach with screenless windows that opened up so you could listen to the waves and smell the ocean. Wonderful.

Great things abound at this inn: binoculars to look at the wildlife from your window, breakfast which always arrived on time and was decent, wine and cheese reception, and the service. The staff was genuinely friendly, made dinner reservations, and was great about the valet service - the car always arrived within 7 to 10 minutes. We were on the first floor and heard nothing from above. It was very quiet and private.

Have the hotel book dinner reservations for you. We did and were surprised about the level of service we received at dinner. Amazing!

We didn't need the suite. We didn't use the extra living room or the bathroom. It was pretty, but useless to us. I would booked the cheaper rooms without the suite feature for a second visit.

The only negative I had was that there were a lot of transient type people on the public beach - a lot of the time. Which meant that often they were right underneath our window - because it was a sheltered area. This didn't go on all night, because the tide came in and they were forced to move! but the deck wasn't very private and we didn't love sitting out there with all of the beach people just looking at us. Absolutely it is not a reflection on the hotel, they can do little about it since it's public land. Book a higher room on the 2nd or 3rd floors and you'll never notice them.

We greatly appreciate our guest’s comments concerning their stay. Feedback is always welcome and considered to be of significant value to our business. As the guest noted, the beach is public. However, we are in close contact with the Monterey Police Department who are working with the Cannery Row Business District to make sure everyone has a pleasant experience.

I was not exactly sure what to expect before arriving at the Spindrift, but we were very pleasantly surprised. The staff was courteous and always willing to please, our room was tastefully decorated and very cozy. The special touches like afternoon wine and cheese and the complimentary continental breakfast were well done and appreciated. I only wish we had planned to stay longer!

If you want to be in the midst of Monterey's tourist activities then this is the place to stay as
it is right in the heart of Cannery Row. You have to look closely as the hotel is not readily apparent but look for the valet stand in front.
They charge $18 a day for parking which allow in and out privileges. The staff was exceedingly helpful and friendly. They have a very nice foyer which made for a comfortable wait for our room to become ready.
The room itself was very nice; we were on the top floor facing the bay. They provide binoculars for viewing the sealife - we saw lots of birds and sea lions (you can hear them as well). The room was beautifully appointed - furniture, bedding, tv, bathrooms all very nice and very comfortable. The only drawback to an otherwise delightful stay is the fireplace in the room. While it is very cozy and romantic to have a wood burning fireplace, they (at least the one in our room) do not vent very well so the room smelled strongly of wood smoke which made sleeping a bit hard. They either need to use wood pressed logs and not real wood or they should consider putting glass doors on the fireplaces.
The room price includes continental breakfast delivered to your room which came promptly and exactly as ordered.
All in all, an enjoyable and cozy place to stay right on the waterfront.
