*Newly redecorated room... wonderful. Big screen TVs , New bedding and
amenities to match my Platinum status.
*Great location for walking to piers, Restaurants, shops, bay beach.
Tip: Do not Valet your car... too expensive. Park in public parking 2 blocks
away and save .
* Great free buffet Breakfast and chefs really work at making it right.
*Concierges: Very well trained and exceptionally friendly and Knowledgeable.

While traveling through Monterey on a business trip, we decided to stay at the Marriott only because of it's proximity to the wharf for dinner, that is within walking distance. It is mandatory valet onsite parking for $19.00 a day which I feel is outrageous, especially since they couldn't park my car on site, and had to go to the overflow lot down the street. (this wasn't shared with us until I handed them our keys, had we chose to park on our own down the street in the overflow lot, it would have been cheaper)
This hotel is really ugly on the outside, and in need of an outside paint job. Really surprised me when I saw it, it is very dated looking .However once inside the rooms were pleasant, nicely decorated with a step out balcony, but it is very noisy since it is right down town, so don't expect to be able to sleep with your sliding door open, unless your used to sirens, loud motorcycles, etc. Staff was friendly. Was disappointed in the pool area, the small pool sits between the two small wings of rooms. The wind really blows hard in there, so it was very unpleasant to try and relax, read, etc. but to be expected with a highrise hotel located on a small downtown lot. Would definately chose to stay somewhere else next time as we weren't impressed and the seafood at the wharf was terrible. (clam chowder was good though)

The Monterey Marriott is specially designed to host large conventions. This means, it is lacking charme, service and amenities. It is poorly built and poorly managed. There are better hotels in Monterey in this price level. Usually I like Marriotts, but this one has disappointed us.
Location: The Marriott is right in downtown, just a short walk to Fishermens Wharf and the Historical Museums. 5 stars for location.
Building: It is a typical business hotel. Strangely, only a very small fraction of rooms have balconies. This is really a disadvantage, especially since there is no area to sit down and relax.
Rooms: Typical business hotel rooms, however, with some shortcomings. No in-room safe. Simple bathroom, with an odd (not soundproof) sliding door. No refridgerator, no mini bar.
Pool: One of the ugliest outdoor pools I have ever seen. It is in a barren courtyard, which is cold, shady, windy and dirty. The pool is not warm enough and the spa tub was closed for several days because they had put some caustic chemical inside. Hence, in April, the pool was useless.
Service: Rooms were often serviced not before 3 p.m. Ice machine on our floor was out of order. Valet parking worked smoothly.
Bar: They only have a sports bar which I do not consider adequate for a hotel of this class.
Dining: For lunch and dinner, we had conference food which was okay. For breakfast, the crabcake eggs benedict were good.
Value: This is not a youth hostel. For the rate they charge they should offer better quality. The nearby Portola Hotel is much better and has better rates. Next time, we will stay there - even if we have a convention in the Marriott.

After visiting the Monterey Peninsula several times, this was our first stay at the Monterey Marriott.

Upon arrival we valet parked our car (very courteous service) and experienced a speedy check-in at the Front Desk (very courteous service, here too.)

Our room (which was a corner room) was not big BUT it was VERY, VERY comfy and cozy. There was a tiny balcony with a view of the street below. It was very tastefully decorated.

We ordered room service and it was delivered very quickly. The food was quite good too. Also had a chance to have lunch at the Sports Bar downstairs and the food was your average sports bar fare but very filling.

I would definitely stay here again while visiting Monterey... it's location in Downtown Monterey meant that there were quite a few shopping areas within walking distance, and some nightlife (bars) as well.

I stayed in a 2-bed room on the 9th floor overlooking the pool/city.
Pros: nice staff, comfortable bed, nice 10th floor function room view, short walk to historic buildings and waterfront in one direction and restaurants nearby, small business center with 2 computers and printers, up to 20 free copies. Most of the food the hotel provided to the conference group was very good.
Cons: shady pool, noisy HVAC outside so unpleasant noise with sliding door open, wallpaper peeling in bath, confusion about Internet access, noisy wedding reception above us until midnight, expensive parking.

So, it met my clean and comfortable requirements. OK on the noise overall, just a distraction.

We stayed at Marriott Monterey for 1 night and it was probably one of the better experiences we had. Staff was very friendly (unlike SF), helpful, the lady gave us a coupon for free breakfast just to be nice. Location is very central, close to the harbour and street market. Our room was clean and bed was comfortable. Breakfast was your typical Marriott buffet, but we liked it. Overall we had a very positive experience.
