“Worth the Money...Great Location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2007

My husband and I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Cannery Row, and were pleasently surprised with all it had to offer. We stayed for 2 nights, 3 days, and paid $ 149 a night. The room was decent in size and nicely furnished. The hotel staff was very helpful, and friendly, as this was our first trip to Monterey. The location was great, we were able to walk to all the restaurants, aquarium, etc. and Pebble Beach, and the 17 Mile Drive is about 10 min away. The hotel offers a great complimentary breakfast in the morning with a wide variety of cereals, toast, bagels, cinnamon rolls, fruit, yogurt, juices, muffins, etc. They also do a free wine and cheese reception in the afternoons which was great as well. The parking is free, and so is the internet which came in handy for us. The hotel also allows you to order food from locals restaurants and have it delivered- we ordered Pelican Pizza, which was very good, only it took a little long to get to us. The only negative for us was you could hear some street traffic from our room, and that being on the 3rd floor outside corridor the elevator dropped us on our floor, but there were stairs to get to our room making it a little hard to get all of our bags there in one shot. We would definitely stay here again, as it offered many great ameneties that other hotels did not offer. We would just pack lighter or ask for a room right near the elevator.

  • Liked — Close to everything. Offered so much for the price
  • Disliked — Could hear some street noise from room.

I was going to be in Monterey on business and was looking for a moderately priced hotel. The Holiday Inn Express fit the bill. You can’t beat the location (one street up from Cannery Row) or the price. I paid $149 plus tax for a king room on a Tuesday and Wednesday night. This is a great value for the area.

As other reviewers have reported the property while clean and well maintained, is not a quiet retreat by any stretch. You will hear street noise, noise from people walking by your room and noise from the plumbing in adjacent rooms. You might also hear the vending and ice machines.

If you are a light-sleeper, bring ear plugs or Ambien.

Parking is an underground garage below the hotel and the spaces are small. If you drive a large truck or SUV, you will be challenged.

Overall, a good pick for business travel. I would not recommend it for anyone looking for a romantic interlude. If this is what you’re looking for, spend the cash and stay at one of the more luxurious Monterey Hotels.

Agree with other reviewers. Alittle pricey but worth it. We stayed just one night and found the place to be very nice. The Front desk was very friendly and helpful. The rooms where a nice size and clean. Easy walk to Cannery Row and dinner at Bubba Gump. We bought our tickets for the Aquarium at the front which saved us time in line. The free continental breakfast was also very good. Parking was conveniently onsite. I did not find the place to be noisy.

I attended a conference at the Marriott in January but chose to stay here because of its price and partially for its location. It was comfortable and quiet -- and for this area, fairly reasonable in price.

Only problem was a remote that needed a battery, but someone at the desk ran one up within minutes. I thought the service was very good -- breakfast well stocked and maintained, rooms clean, check-in prompt.

HI Express seems to do well whenever I stay at one. This one was no exception. Easy walking distance to the attractions in the area of Cannery Row. A pleasant 10 minute walk to the wharf. Lots and lots of restaurants all around. If you stay here, try a short walk to Hula's Island Grill. Fun, tasty, casual, reasonable.

Loved the area and HI Ex made it affordable.

We just returned from our two night stay at Holiday Inn Express & there was definitely both good and not so good things about this hotel.

Pros: 1.) Location, location, location - about 1-2 blocks to Cannery Row and within a long stroll to Fisherman's Wharf on a nice bike/walking trail along the water. 2.) The parking is FREE, which you won't find at many other properties this near to Cannery Row. 3.) The free continental breakfast was great - fruit, cereal, bread, oatmeal, hot cinnamon rolls, milk, juices, coffee, yogurt. 4.) The front desk personnel were very helpful and pleasant to deal with and we were allowed into our room three hours before our 3pm check-in time so I was pleased. 5.) Clean room with nice showerhead in bathroom and lots of hot water.

Cons: 1.) Expensive...but then what did I expect over President's Day weekend on Cannery Row? Other hotels nearby were MUCH higher priced. At $210 per night booked through the Holiday Inn Express website, I felt it was more for the location, not the room. At a different time of year, I probably could have gotten a better deal. 2.) Although our room with king bed was tastefully furnished and the bed comfortable (bedding was a bit worn), the bathroom was not the best. Hopefully this was just our room and many of the other rooms had better bathrooms than ours. The bathroom was clean but the vanity top was LOW...only 29 1/2" off the ground (I carry a tape measure in my purse!) and we are tall so it was not convenient for us. The mirror was also very low so that my husband couldn't view himself in it unless he bent down. Most people of average height probably wouldn't have this issue. No separate vanity area existed in our room. There was only a pocket door seperating the bath from bedroom (the bed was so close to the bathroom that a regular door would have hit the bed) and for some odd reason, the light switch for the bathroom was not IN the bathroom....but outside the door in the bedroom which was very odd and hard to remember. 3.) Lots of noise heard at night in the halls/on the staircase even from the top floor - water pipes very noise when others used their showers as well.

Would I stay here again? If I were able to get a better rate I probably would. The prices at the other Cannery Row properties are MUCH MUCH higher and I don't know if I'd be willing to pay those prices for a nicer bathroom & less noise. The staff at Holiday Inn Express were great and that meant a lot to us.

Stayed at this hotel for a recent weekend getaway to Monterey/Carmel. Price was $120/nt booked through the Holiday Inn website. Hotel employees were extremely friendly and helpful. They provide complimentary continental breakfast and evening wine/cheese. Room was nice, clean, but decor seemed a little outdated. Unfortunately, the heater/AC unit was very noisy and so was the traffic from the street behind the hotel. Rooms open into a courtyard and floors are arranged in an odd manner--e.g., exit elevator lobby, go down steps 1/2 floor, walk around corner to 3-4 rooms, turn corner, go up 1/2 floor to 3-4 rooms, etc.

Underground parking is really convenient--no need to move the car since Cannery Row is only a couple of blocks away. Monterey Bay Aquarium is only a short walk away and there are several restaurants and shops in the area. Also, Longs Drugs is nearby and open 24 hours for any last-minute needs.

Would definitely stay here again on next trip to Monterey.
