“Great location, footsteps from everything”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013

Nice rooms, with lots of space for a family of five (pullout sofa). So easy to walk to everything. Breakfast and wine/cheese were slightly above average, and plentiful.

The only downside is some awkward half-staircases that cannot be avoided.

Note that there is another Holiday Inn in the area -- that one has a pool but is on a highway.

We stayed 2 nights: one in a large room for four with rollout, the other in two spate twins. Both were good for a family of four with two very large teens.
Yes the breakfast isn't gourmet but it is plentiful and I actually enjoyed my coffee and cinnamon roll looking out to the sea. Everything easily walkable. Laid back vibe.

Room Tip: Room 311 has a roll out and isn't on a road

Stayed at this hotel 25th July with my family of two teenagers and wife. The actual hotel is in a very boring and bland setting with roads and houses all around the property. The checking person was rude, arrogant and not at all interested in offering any help or advice on the area. The rooms are set in a rectangle courtyard which means you have to lug your cases about 200 yards from the lift up two flights of stairs if your on the 3rd floor as we were!
Overall the hotel and rooms are way overpriced at nearly $380 per night for a 2 star property, the so called town and pier at Monterey is definitely not worth a visit in my opinion stay in a another town and hotel if you want good value, service and an interesting night.

Room Tip: Ask for the first floor if you must stay here !!

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. I'm sorry that you were disappointed with your visit to Monterey. It is true that the summer months in Monterey are higher in rate than the rest of the year, and I apologize if you were surprised by the price. We do our best to represent our property online, and I'm sorry if you did not find what you expected when you arrived in person. I hope that you enjoy your future travels.

I needed a room with two beds near the Monterey Aquarium. The Intercontinental had none available so I defaulted to this property. I did not expect much. I was pleasantly surprised. First, the location is perfect. It is a 5 minute walk to Cannery Row and 10 minutes to the Aquarium, yet it is far enough away to be out of the hustle and bustle of the touristy area.

The room was very large and came with a refrigerator and a safe (which not all HIs have). The staff was very congenial. The hotel has no pool or hot tub (though there are indications a hot tub was installed but taken out of service) but it has a central outdoor courtyard (which the rooms open of off) which makes it very pleasant. It also keeps it quiet as there are no hallways to capture or transmit sounds. Our room, on the third floor, also had a partial ocean view at no extra charge.

They have a wine and cheese hour in the afternoon, which was nice. They provide bottled water on check in. The HI included breakfast was typical and average. Parking was easy and there was no problem leaving our car here after we checked out and walking to the Aquarium, thus saving a substantial parking fee in the Cannery Row area.

To sum it up, the property is quite decent and the location is excellent. You won't go wrong here.

Hotel was in a great location right in the middle of the tourist area. Very charming HI Express, not the typical ones I have stayed in before. This one felt like a boutique-style inn. Very nice guy manning the front desk. Indoor parking was great. Private outdoor sitting area. Complimentary coffee and apples, and wine and cheese in the early evening.

Our room was quite quaint and stylish for a HI Express, cute country decor. We had two double beds, they were ok, still had a good sleep. (Maybe suggest mattress toppers on the beds...). Good, clean bathroom.

I would stay here again.

Our stay in the heart of Cannery Row, Monterey couldn't have been better. Sanjay on the front desk and his colleague were a very welcoming team in the evenings. The hotel is placed just at the back of Cannery Row and so is in walking distance of the main restaurants and attractions in that area. The hotel is very clean and tidy and exterior is very much in keeping with the other buildings in the historic area. The breakfast area / lobby gets crowded first thing around breakfast time. There aren't enough tables and chairs to accommodate all the guests. There is one 4 slot toaster for 50 odd people all trying to eat at the same time !! The breakfast food is cheap low grade mass catering quality preformed omelettes etc. Not super tasty but if you are on a budget it will do. The rooms are very clean and modern for the property. Happy to recomend it to others. The internet works well too.

From check-in to check-out, our stay here was excellent and far above expectations. The staff, especially the guys at the front desk, are first-rate. Their friendly and helpful knowledge of the area and its amenities were priceless.

Complimentary Breakfast offerings are outstanding compared to everywhere except that place that makes made-to-order omelets. The evening wine and cheese reception with a variety of juices for the kids was welcome after a day of hoofing it around Cannery Row and the MB Aquarium.

The rooms are spacious, and the blond furniture lends a Danish modern flair. The three stories are built around a scenic central courtyard. Mini-frig and safe are handy. The only drawback is that there are 5 and 7-step staircases here and there, besides the elevator, which are tricky to navigate with luggage, but of course, staff is there to help with that.

Room 305 is on the Drake St. side but a block off the street and it had a nice peek view of the bay. Quiet and good sleeping there.

Free parking below is easy and ample.

I noticed that rooms had the carpets cleaned after each stay and asked about that. Seems that is their MO. Wow!

Overall, this was one of my most satisfying hotel stays.
