Hilton Garden Inn Monterey
Ranked #17 of 56 Hotels in Monterey
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 5, 2012

Stayed one night in July. Usual good service one expects from Hilton. The location was great. The Hilton Garden Inns and Double Tree units are set up with restaurants so you are spared the morning "cattle drive" for generally horrible "free" food at their budget priced hotels.

The hotel is not within short walking distance of the bay, but for me that was a plus, since it was quieter and just a short drive away with no problems parking. It's only a few minutes away from the 17 mile drive and the aquarium. You pay $9.75 to see how the 0.1% live on Pebble Beach.

By the way, this hotel is not the usual cookie cutter design one is used to. From the road it has a certain modern architectural feel. From the inside on a foggy, dreary day it can be a little bleak. If you were recently paroled from either a state or federal maximum security prison, you may want to choose another Hilton hotel. See photo. (Just kidding.)

Thank you for taking the time to post a "Stay Here" review of HGI Monterey. We appreciated hearing that you liked our service and restaurant food. We do receive a lot of positive comments on our location and setting and it was good to hear that you also liked the location. I assume you also liked seeing how the .1% does live in Pebble Beach, as well as the picturesque coastline views along the 17 mile drive!

Nice hotel.
Free parking, free wifi.
Desent pool, with fire place next to it.
Didn't have breakfast or dinner here on our 3 night stay, because Carmel is only 5 minutes away and definately is much nicer to go to.

Nothing to complain about, can recommend it.

We appreciate your "Nice" review! Good to hear that you liked and took advantage of our free parking and We-Fi, as well as the outdoor heated pool and fire pit. Carmel does have many excellent restaurants and the 5 minute drive makes it so convenient to dine there. We hope you return soon and often!

WE stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on July 29, 2012. We found it to be a ok place to stay. It has under ground parking with elevator servise tothe floors above. My only gripe about this was the long walk to the elevator from your parking place then the walk to the room.
We liked the room. It had just enough room for 2-adults and 2-14 yr olds, and the beds were comfortable. We were facing the freeway but it was not bothersome unless we were on our patio.
This Hotel is not within walking distance to the Wharf, but it is a short EZ drive to get to it. There was plenty of City Parking at the Wharf for a fee. We stayed there because of the price of the other Hotels that were closer to the Wharf and would recommend this hotel to all..

Thank you for your review of HGI Monterey and your recommendation for other people to stay here. Glad to hear the beds were comfortable and you had enough space for the 4 of you in your family. Sorry to hear the walk to/from the elevators was not as convenient as you would like. We invite you to return on your next "Road Trip" to Monterey!

Friendly and helpful staff, free WiFi, free parking, free cookies at 5pm, complimentary tea and coffee in reception in the morning all go to make this a good place to stay. I should add comfortable rooms too. The location is OK despite being out of the centre because there's easy access to Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row and Downtown with a short drive.

While the hotel is very comfortable and kept up well, the location is only decent if your goal is to explore Fisherman's Wharf, the aquarium, and Cannery Row.

We've stayed at this hotel several times. After this visit, it's unlikely we'll return.

Pros: The location is great. Free parking and free Wi-Fi are definite pluses. The morning coffee in the lobby is very good coffee. The hotel restaurant offers a well-prepared buffet at breakfast, featuring excellent fruit, although the choices for entrees are limited. It's a bit expensive for what is served. The hotel staff was generally very nice.

Cons: The hotel was generally in need of updating. We noticed stains and one rip on the hallway carpets. The toilet in our room needed a lot of attention to work properly. The bed sagged in the middle. The housekeeper did not replenish the shampoo and conditioner daily.

The first night of our stay, my husband walked into the bathroom at about 10:00 and noticed ants crawling on the wall. We reported this to the front desk, but did not want to vacate the room at that hour so it could be sprayed . Our crawling "roommates" reappeared every night we were there. We really didn't want to share our accommodations with these creatures...especially while on vacation.

We're not likely to return.

Free wifi and free parking are the roads to my heart. If you add to that a very friendly and helpful staff you have in me a repeat guest. I preferred to be away from the center of town so I did not mind the location. I did not find the hotel shabby or in need of an upgrade as other reviewers have said. The only drawback was that there was no in room safe and the safes at reception were not big enough to fit my computers? To me, this is a significant drawback.
