“Excellent Service, excellent food”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

This Monterey restaurant has a spectacular view of the bay. I use that word just as it should be used, the view is spectacular. Schooners could probably exist as a "great view" restaurant alone, but they don't. Everything about this place is excellent, from the energetic, attentive service to the innovative, well presented food.

I had a Veuve Cliquot (the mark-up was very reasonable), the tuna appetizer, and the tenderloin with the "angry prawns". The tuna was a small art portion on top of a large block of rose salt (Himalaya, Bolivian, who knows). It was top quality, fresh, and had an invigorating flavor.

The steak was very high quality and served with two sauces of complimenting flavor. The prawns were fresh and went well with the sauce.

The service was very attentive, to the point that I never had to ask for anything. I asked for and received a custom dessert, and the entire experience was positive.

“Good for lunch”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

We like Schooners for lunch. Dinner (while it is no longer The Duck Club) still seems a little stuffy and pricey. The view is great, the food decent. The fresh made potato chips were good. Wait staff was not attentive, had trouble getting their attention.

“Clambake Tuesdays.”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

Recently my fiance and I went to Schooners for dinner. It was our first time there and we will definitely return. I had the Clam Bake Special and he had the Seafood Cioppino. Edgar was our server and he made sure we were provided top notch service.

“Consistency please.”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

Normally we try to stay away from our hotel's restaurants and prefer to explore the local scene, but during one chilly August evening during our stay in Monterey, we decided to have an early dinner our hotel's "Scooners Coastal Kitchen & Bar."
This turned out to be a very good choice!
Perfectly cooked Cavatelli pasta with plenty of Lobster and beautifully presented and a Spaghetti with spicy chilli Clams arrived hot and tasty.
The service was courteous and professional and it was a very pleasant restaurant experience.
Now, had it just been for this one visit to Scooners, an excellent rating would be in order, but when we came back a couple of days later for a Cavatelli & Lobster encore, the dish was an overcooked soggy mess and it didn't help the food presentation that one of the servers by accident dropped the entire content of the (pre-shredded) Parmesan mill onto the dish although the Parmesan did soak up the excess watery content on the plate.
Otherwise, the braised Short Ribs were very good and we enjoyed our evening at the superb Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa -- all this within a short walk to our beautiful appointed suite overlooking the wondrous Monterey Bay.
We could easily have stayed another week at Monterey Plaza.

“Over-Priced and Under Wowed”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

If you are going to Monterey, there are so many great places to eat, skip this one. The service was OK but we had a hard time getting the waiters attention, the menu was limited and the drinks were outrageously priced. You are paying for the view, but there are much better choices with a view.
