After reading the reviews on Monterey Fish House Restaurant, What a big disappointment. On Mon. Aug 4, make dinner reservations for Sat. Sept. 4th. On arrival they had a table ready, but it was next to the restroom entrance. Would expect a better table making reservations 6 days before. Had a hard time understanding the waiter. He spoke very loud and his English was poor. Now the dinners, ordered the calamari with piccata sauce. received it DRY without any sauce. The vegetables were over cooked-no butter or sauce on them-Rice was like MUSH. 2nd dinner ordered the Sea Bass on special. The Sea Bass was swimming in sauce, vegetables overcooked. After this horrible experience with our dinners we were still looking foward to Banana's Foster for dessert only to be told NO banana's Foster. We were complety disappointed in the whole dining experience and WILL NOT eat there again!

Going on the advice of folks who wrote their reviews of the Monterey Fish House on my favorite trip planning website, TripAdvisor, we deliberately bypassed the Monterey Pier for dinner and went here. What a great decision!!! As folks have said, the atmosphere is as charming and fun as the food is deeeeelicious!

We arrived without reservations (highly recommend) but were willing to wait, no matter how long it took. Standing shoulder to shoulder at the bar, we were able to enjoy our drinks as well as look at all of the various “eye candy” (dishes on their way to customers) that passed by. Everyone was doing the same thing. “What’s THAT? Mmmm... THAT looks good!” No one was holding back. This, of course, prompted a lot of discussion, laughter, and fun amongst those of us waiting to indulge.

Matt, who worked his magic behind the bar, is the General Manager for this and another restaurant, the “Village Fish House.” He worked so fast and efficiently, I wondered how he could maintain his friendly smile and awesome attitude. Despite being “up to his eyeballs” in food and drink for the people sitting at the bar and eating, making drinks for the entire restaurant, and keeping tabs of the waiting list, he never crumbled under the pressure. He must LOVE his job OR love being here so much, it’s not really a job; it’s FUN!

Okay... on to the FOOD. (See photos to whet your appetite!) Starting off with a nice bowl of Mussels in Marinara Sauce with Garlic, we could hardly hold back. Sharing with my sweetheart was great, but I knew each of us wanted our own. (Ahhh... isn’t love grand?) We happily soaked up the rest of the tasty sauce with the basket of crunchy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside bread that accompanied the dish.

Course Two was a Chilled Steamed Artichoke (my favorite food in the whole world!) as we were smack in the middle of artichoke heaven, the place where it is grown. We almost devoured it before I could snap a picture!

Our final course was chosen as a result of the way it looked and smelled as it passed by, along with the many “Mmmm’s...” that could be heard around the room. It was the “Special of the Day: Artichoke with Seafood.” Seeing that it was a HUGE dish, we decided to split it. Creamy and delectable, this dish should be frozen and shipped across the country to ME! With large chunks of fire-roasted clams, mussels, shrimp, and artichokes bathed in a creamy sauce, sitting on a bed of pasta, and sprinkled with a generous dash of parmesan cheese, it was a culinary masterpiece.

We chose a local white wine, “Carmel Road 2007 Chardonnay,” to add that liquid dimension that rounds off a perfect dinner. It had a nice crisp start, fruity middle, and a full, silky finish.

What makes this place so special? All of the above PLUS the staff: Darren, the host, who is more than accommodating, he’s welcoming and warm, along with the chefs in the kitchen. Like a well-tuned dance company, they somehow, someway, were able to turn out these incredible dishes in a very small space. Seeing their oak wood grill in action was like watching the phoenix rise again... and again. All to the delight of those who are fortunate enough to indulge their palate and satisfy their craving for some of the best food on earth!

All that has been said about the noise and the wait is true. This place is loved to death. Change anything and it wouldn't be the Monterey Fish House.

One more time I braved it to get a plate of the Sicilian calamari and a glass of the house cab. Still spicy and delicious with the kalamata olives and tomato chunks. Good to the last mopped drop. This is what I come to Monterey for.

This place was recommended by a friend. When we got there I was surprised at how small it was. The dining area is about the size of the average Burger King. Combine that with fantastic Italian seafood and they are always packed. The meal was a little on the expensive side for me, but not excessively. The room wasn't really loud until one particular group came in. They were talking very loudly and in a small room that makes it difficult on everybody. Other than a group of rude diners, it was great.
