“Family Holiday Getaway”
Reviewed January 17, 2007

My family stayed at Portola Plaza from 12/27-12/29. Service could not have been any better. Everyone was very polite and willing tohelp in any way possible. We had a king and plenty of room for our 1yr old to roam. The view from the 5th floor wasn't bad, but a better view can be had on the 6th or 7th floor.
The location is the real draw to the hotel. The Old Fisherman's Wharf is right out the back door of the hotel. Downtown Monterey is right in front of you as you exit the hotel. The only real drawback was the parking fee.

We booked through Expedia at $107/night. I later found AAA for $104.

We got a good holiday deal (about $129 a night) and the hotel worked out really well. It's a very nice hotel right at Fisherman's wharf and within strolling distance of the Aquariam. They didn't have the crib and mini-fridge in the room when we arrived as we had requested, but they were quick to get it. We also asked for a DVD player, but they couldn't get it to us because the AV staff was out for the holiday (we were there on Christmas Day), which seemed a little ridiculous. That aside, it worked out really well, and was a sparkling clean and perfectly comfortable hotel. Good beer in the onsite brewpub, too! And an easy 45 minute drive to Big Sur and 10 minutes to Carmel. We'd recommend it.

We had booked on a package with free parking, upgraded room and free internet access. While checking in, we again upgraded to an ocean view room, but I would advise you to skip that. It was $50 per night and we stayed for two nights, but to be honest, we hardly stayed in the room so I have no clue why we wanted the upgrade. The upgraded room came with breakfast at Jack's though which was a nice touch. The only problem was that I could not get onto the internet. The tech came up and tried several times but something was wrong with their internet connection. The good thing was that while checking out Chad, the front desk asst mgr took off the upgrade for one night from our bill. We did not ask for it or did not expect it so it was a nice gesture on his part.
The staff was very friendly and helpful except for the woman attending our table at Jack for breakfast the first morning we were there. We are usually good tippers but left her only a dollar, her service was terrrible. But then again, the next day we had this amazing person who was friendly and attentive and we came away with a very good impression of Jack's.
The location of this hotel is great. You can walk to Fisherman's Wharf like the other reviewers have pointed out and also the downtown area of Monterey.
The room is a good sized one, we asked for a crib and got an actual one which is better than the flimsy things you get at some hotels. We would stay here again.

I have stayed at the Portola Plaza hotel for the past 3 years to attend annual conference every November. The location of this hotel is convenient and the Monterey Convention Center is right next door. The front desk staff is very helpful and friendly. The lobby is one of the nicest lobbies around and it is one of the few lobbies I do not mind spending time in. The hotel food is good.
Downtown Monterey is nearby as well as the wharf. The Italian Seafood resturant at the end tip of the wharf has good food, but the environment is tacky and the service is average. Rosines in downtown Monterey has delicious, hardy and good value breakfasts and dinners. I highly recommend it. The Rio Grill in Carmel has good food too. I recommend staying at this hotel!

Our stay exceeded our expectations. We were four adults ranging in age from 25 to 75, and each of us were very pleased with the accommodations. We had adjoining rooms with one being a JR suite. Plenty of room for stretching and spreading out. We booked a package deal which included Aquarium tickets and breakfast at Jack's (very nice restaurant in the hotel). Location was perfect ~ walking distance to the Wharf and Cannery Row. With so much to do in Monterey, we all wished that we could have stayed longer to enjoy the accommodations.
The staff was friendly and professional. All our questions and requests were handled promptly and with a smile. We will definitely stay here on future visits to the area. The price was very good for our package and this location.

This is a nice convention and large meeting/event type hotel. The lobby itself is very large and not very comfortable. Its more like a shopping mall walk through area. Check-in however is fine and the cookies they give you are a pleasant touch.

The hotel is quite large. We were there on the holiday special ...good rate....and had a standard room. The bathroom was "wierd" meaning there was no room to put anything. The tub area was not clean when we got there.

The beds however are quite comfortable and a large sitting chair to enjoy. With the weather being rainy, it is a comfortable room to enjoy and watch an in-room movie.

The bar area is nice. Enjoyed a couple of drinks there and their stilton cheese appetizer. Quite tasty....however to slice the cheese and serve a few crackers/apples with it took about 45 minutes prep time. One wonders.

We went to the Sports Bar afterward and the atmosphere is quite nice; and the service is good. However, again...the kitchen speed was amazingly slow. Our waiter, who was wonderful, came by several times to apologize. He gave us a couple of beers on the house due to the excessive wait. In short, service good; kitchen time very slow. The restaurant should address this. We were there an hour or so after the major parties in the house took place (i.e. wedding, holiday party, etc.), but by the time we ordered, it was an hour or so after these parties were served. So...its hard to understand an hour wait for chicken wings.

In terms of location, it is an easy walk to Monterey wharf.
It is a nice hotel....but it lacks much of the charm that one can find in smaller and customer service oriented lodging in the Monterey and Carmel area.

I would not hesitate to stay there if I were going to a convention or something. If not, I would choose another place to stay.

I really liked Portola's Location. The size, I could have done without. Due to last minute nature of our trip, we were kind of out of luck for accomodations of our choice. I generally prefer smaller, botique style arrangements. The rooms were nice, beds were not the most comfortable I have ever slept in and we had water pressure issue. Otherwise, the unique touches and nice quality of bedding, chairs, etc. were great!

I loved the location of Portola. I liked being able to walk down to the Old Fisherman's Wharf, and I loved the biking/jogging paths so nearby... many restaurants, fabulous bookstore, the Golden State Theatre. A fabulous little walk to Paris Bakery Cafe, awesome croissants and coffee! I love everything about Monterey, so staying at Portola allows you the freedom to see much of the down town portion, with Cannery Row and such being easily accessible.

The pictures attached are of things VERY nearby the hotel, I failed to take in room photos, but did get a view outside our window of an awesome Brittish store, great stuff in there!

  • Tips/Secrets — Don't miss Golden State Theatre, great experience and very close to Portola!
