An absolute pleasure. Excellent for kids. The pool was fantastic with a lovely warm hot tub (38c•) to relax after a long day out. Most of all the location is brilliant. Everywhere is within walking distance but also a free trolley bus service stops just across the street from the front door. This will take you all around town for free.
Yes, there are seagulls that scream but no more than you'd expect for a seaside resort. Rooms are spacious with coffee and fridge facilities. Beds are extremely comfortable with additional pillows for extra comfort. A perfect place for a short break.

The room was nice and the hotel staff was very accommodating, but with no A/C in the rooms you have to keep the screen-door open to cool off the room. As a result you get to enjoy all of the other noisy guests at the hotel who also have their doors open. If you're coming from the east coast and want to go to bed early this can be an issue.

When a long lost childhood friend and I, were spending some time making new memories as adult friends - we decided to travel to the Portola Hotel and Spa at Monterey Bay. When we arrived, the most friendly and helpful valet attendant met us at our car. He made us feel as though we were the only guests there while simultaneously getting our luggage inside, and our car checked in. The cordial and professional staff got us checked into our room quickly, and settled into very comfortable surroundings. Clean facilities, very comfortable beds, and friendly helpful staff made our stay at Portola Hotel and Spa an excellent choice.

Room Tip: Higher rooms are breezy and more private.

This was our first stay at this hotel and hopefully not the last! Fantastic location, great hotel for kids and pets, super kid friendly. This is a beautiful town to visit and this hotel made our stay that much better. Cookies at checkin were also a great bonus! Enjoyed the breakfast buffet the last day and it was amazing as well, hope to be back soon

Had a great two night stay at the Portola. We were anticipating an upgrade as we had shared our reservation on social media and were given a voucher for an upgrade to show upon check in but we were told there weren't any. Oh, well! Our room was on the 5th floor and I was nervous because the carpet in the hallway needed a good vacuuming. Fortunately our room was clean and spacious. A bit worn in the bathroom. The breakfast buffet at Jack's was fantastic. Service was very slow but the woman making the omelettes was sweet and charming! Great selection, delicious food. Walking to Cannery Row and the aquarium was easy and the views were fabulous. Also tried Peter B Brewpub on site. Wishing we had brought jackets to sit outside as the tables had very cool fire pits in them! Inside there were too many televisions for our taste. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, Monterey is a real gem!

My family and I stayed here Thursday through a Saturday night, and overall it was nice. The rooms and hotel could use a bit of a modern makeover but the beds were very comfortable, and didn't have many complaints.
We stayed on the 4th floor and I would suggest requesting a room on the 5th floor or higher. Our room opened up onto a courtyard which was pretty much eye level to people standing out there. Just lacks a little privacy when you want to open the sliding glass door for a little air. There are plantation shutters but if someone's out there, they could probably listen to your conversation if they wanted.
I liked the hotel but you're definitely paying for the location here. You can walk pretty much anywhere you'd like as a tourist in Monterey. I'd probably stay here again as long as I was on a higher floor.

They were fantastic about helping us to get a romantic room with a view, and just very friendly staff (can't beat the chocolate chip cookies on check-in either). Great location by many restaurants as well as the FIsherman's Wharf and a waterfront bike/walking path where the seals lounge. Room was very modern with a large bathroom and shower, excellent bedding. Only downside was a little noise at night from the traffic driving in the tunnel below, conversations in the plaza, and even the seals nearby - but not too bad.

Room Tip: Ask to be away from the tunnel road if noise bothers you.
