This hotel is located very centrally in Monterey - walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, Customs House and many restaurants. The hotel lobby is nicely done, the staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are decent sized, clean and the beds are comfortable. Even though you are in the centre of town, the rooms are quiet. To top it off the breakfast is fantastic - hot food, cereal, pancakes, fruit, etc. A great way to start your day of exploring. Would definitely stay here again.

The only negative is parking is $17 a day.

Room Tip: The hotel has a bar on site so try to stay away from that section of the hotel

Great place. Nice rooms well kept and clean. Friendly and helpful staff especially Marissa at the front desk who was helpful to me as I had a problem with my rental car.
The Hotel has a walkway that leads to the foot of Monterey`s Fisherman`s Wharf with all of the shops and Restaurants at your quick disposal.
The also sold Monterey Aquarium tickets that gives you two days for the price of one.
You won`t go wrong with this choice.

I recently stayed here for a wedding and had the breakfast package with the bottomless mimosas and what a great deal! The breakfast was great, food was fresh and lots of options to choose from (pastries, cereal, hot food, fruit, yogurt, to order items like eggs, French toast, waffles, etc., and they even had smoked salmon and bagels) Plus bottomless mimosas and coffee! Not a bad way to start the day.

I also wanted to say a big thanks to the valet staff, especially Pierre. We did some wine tasting in the area and one of the bottles broke in the car. Pierre did not hesitate when I told him my dilemma and ran to get rags. For the next 15 minutes he helped clean out the mess. The amount attention to customer service this hotel displayed is equal to some of the highest and most expensive hotels I have stayed at (i.e. $600 plus a night kind of places)

Gym and pool were clean and we were lucky that it was sunny and 75 degrees and were able to hang out by the pool one day. We used the gym as well and it was clean, had towels and an above average machinery for a hotel gym.

Rooms were very clean and updated. We stayed on the street side and wish we changed rooms as the traffic was a little noisy. With the door closed it wasn't an issue, but because it was a warm weekend, we had the sliding balcony door open most of the time.

Overall a great experience. Food was excellent, staff was great, friendly and extremely helpful in wine spilling accidents.

Room Tip: Rooms on street are little noisy.

Spent three days to relax, walk along the coast and piers, visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Had wonderful diverse breakfasts at Jack's in the hotel. Excellent service all around from valet parking to front desk to restaurant service. Loved the location as we could walk about everywhere we wanted to go, Fisherman's Wharf for seafood dinners and to meet friends. The aquarium was a short drive. Looked at the awesome sea life and displays then walked along Cannery Row and bought some saltwater taffy. The hotel said they may have a shuttle to the aquarium after Memorial Day. That would be nice.

Room wise, loved the great beds for a restful sleep, the Keurig coffee machine, Newman's Own coffee. We brought some of our own K cups as we love coffee and it's always cool enough in Monterey to drink coffee any time of the day.

Everyone at the hotel was very nice and all of them wished us to have a great day. Customer service is tops here. Other than the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite and a hotel in St. Moritz, Switzerland, this is the finest hotel I've stayed in for years. I can't wait to go again.

Room Tip: We requested a bay view room and it was awesome. Could not hear any car traffic. No kids on our tr...

My fiance and I stayed at the Portola in May for the weekend of the American Le Mans races. We had never stayed here before. Upon entering the lobby, we were very impressed on how nice everything was. Our room was perfect, even though it was quite a walk from the elevator. There was even a Keurig in our room. Our bed was extremely comfortable and I loved the way the bathroom was decorated (we must have gotten an upgraded room). We had appetizers and drinks at Peter B's Pub on Friday. On Saturday night, my fiance proposed to me at Domenico's on the Wharf (which was a 2 min walk from the Portola). We went back to Peter B's and sat outside on their patio to celebrate with a few more drinks. I'm so happy we stayed here because the Portola made our trip that much more special.

Room Tip: I would suggest asking for a room close to an elevator especially if you're carrying a lot of it...

We had a suite 315 and enjoyed it to the maximum! Everything was clean and spacious and the hotel is at the start of the fisherman's wharf, which allows the best of food selections and view of the bay! Highly recommended for anyone wanting the best of the area!

Room Tip: Stay in 315 or 215 to get access to internet through the JACK's Bar free internet. Hard to belie...

We love this hotel! We have been coming here for years & have never been disappointed. The location is wonderful, you can walk to Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row & downtown Monterey. It is our first choice in hotels in the area. A great value, very consistent!
