This was a last minute vacation and I was still able to get an excellent ocean view room. Everyone from the moment I drove up was extremely professional, yet friendly. Starting with the valet service, warm cookies at check-in, stamps needed, were obtained, and my important mail was sent out. Did I mention the concierge? Excellent!!!!! And room service? Yummy!!! They did not miss a beat. The weather was not our best friend that weekend, but there was still plenty to do. For a first time visitor to Monterey Bay, I could not have asked for a more pleasant experience. I look forward to returning to to such a wonderful place and hotel. I cannot say enough about the superior service and beauty of its' location of the Portola Hotel & Spa!!!!!

Room Tip: If you like to view the ocean, an Ocean view room is beautiful.

The Portola Plaza Hotel and Spa is a beautiful Hotel in beautiful Monterey. The hotel has a green policy and even offers incentives if you decline maid service for a day.The rooms, while not large are comfortable and very clean. They are walking distance to the wharf and an easy walk to Cannery Row and The Aquariam. The restaurant on site offers great food at a decent price. I would chose this hotel over other hotels in this price range and never regret it.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side of the building are quieter and have better views.

This is a large hotel located in downtown Monterey. The hotel is a bit dated (quite the 80s feel), but the room we stayed in was clean and had a comfortable king-size bed. I really liked the Keurig coffer maker and large LCD tv.

I would avoid staying in any room that is above Alvarado Street (the pedestrian part separating the hotel from the parking garage). The glass doors in the room barely blocked any sound and my girlfriend was woken up several times from various people yelling and singing on the street (Queen songs and the national anthem...) at 2 am.

Also note there is no wi-fi in the rooms and parking is $17.

We traveled to Monterey to run the Big Sur International Marathon & the Portola was the host hotel. Despite having the Race Expo in their conference centre as well as being totally booked the hotel was clean, well staffed and relaxing.
Valet parking was friendly and always ready with our vehicle. Anne at the concierge was amazing (when she was there). Anne was very knowledgeable about Monterey and seemed to really listen to our likes & dislikes. Unfortunately the concierge desk wasn't always staffed with wonderful people like Anne and when we asked for a dinner recommendation at the front desk the two women there just looked at each other and were unable to give us a solid recommendation. Fortunately, the Portola is right on the wharf so we wandered out there and located a fabulous place to eat & watch the sunset.
The rooms are spacious, clean and well stocked. The hot tub and pool area are out of the way but surprisingly quite - which was a welcome change. The location of the Portola is unbeatable, close access to running/bike trails, the wharf, downtown & many fabulous restaurants.

Room Tip: Choose something on the 3rd floor -- instead of a balcony you will end up with a patio all your own...

I spent the night I asked my girlfriend to marry me at this hotel. After being screwed over by Priceline.com, I decided to stay at this hotel, on top of paying for my room from Priceline. and the money I spent on both rooms was worth the experience the Portola gave me. I told the staff before hand my situation and they did everything they could to make my night a great experience. The view of the bay was awesome and the room was great! The bed was very comfortable and breakfast was one of the best hotel breakfasts I had ever had. The pool and hot tube were also very nice. I had a great time again and very happy I decided to stay here on our special night.

Hotel is nicely located for exploring the area. Several cafes located a nice stroll down the street, and behind the hotel is the coastal trail and wharf area. Our hotel room (room 216 in the side building, not the main one where the lobby is located) was nicely furnished - the king bed was very plush and comfortable, looked recently redecorated with white plantation shutters and rattan-look wallpaper that gave it a nice island-/vacation-vibe. Unfortunately it wasn't very restful - the room was noisy and stuffy. We were next to the elevator so got a lot of foot traffic noise. The bathroom fan was very weak and the room got really muggy and stuffy after showering, so we tried to open the window to get some fresh air and ended up with a lot of noise from outside as our room overlooked the parking garage roof top and also the pool below. Overall I would come back but I'd request a different room.

Room Tip: Avoid room 216 - next to elevator and looking out to the garage - if you are a light sleeper or if y...
