We were celebrating our anniversary, and hotel staff made it so specially with complimentary wine together with the chocolate covered strawberries that I originally ordered. Arlene at front desk was fantastic!

Would stay here again for sure.

Things started out sour by them losing our reservation which included breakfast. It wasn't too bad there but had to jump through hoops to get any kind of deal. The property is very nice in the public areas and rooms are decorative but paper thin walls and low res TV didn't make it worth the very high price. The staff was friendly and accommodating to an extent. Don't touch the special bottled water in the room or it's four bucks/bottle. Ouch! Pool and Jacuzzi are very nice and well kept, not sure but thinking the pool was a salt water pool, it felt very nice and skin smooth after going in. The gym room is small with a nice complement of bikes and treadmills. There are a couple elliptical machines and a central multi use machine. Monterey is very expensive in general but it is worth a visit as it has a lot to offer and the shop people are friendly. It's kind of a mixed bag. If you can get a better package you are better off but the noise factor made it kind of unpleasant. Every toilet within about four rooms in every direction were very evident. There is no a.c. A small wall heater works well, even in sub freezing temperatures outside. Overall, there may be better choices close or near. Do your homework and you'll be glad. Don't miss the English pub around the corner. Food is fantastic.

I stayed at the Portola Hotel in September 2012, we had one of the newly refurbished rooms which are really stunning with super comfortable beds. The hotel overall is very nice and very good value. We used the pool which although quite small is nice and the spa is really good and their massage was fantastic.
However by far the highlight of our trip was the most wonderful lady at concierge, she has incredible knowledge of the area, she gives you amazing tips and tells you such interesting stories, my partner and I loved to go and see her each day and get great local advice on where is good to go on day trips, what restaurants are good and so on, she really made our stay special.

We attended the regional bridge tournament there and we loved the hotel, the staff, and the location. People at the front desk were very pleasant and helpful. Everything is within walking distance. The rooms are spacious and well appointed.

Arriving to a hotel at 2am in the morning you might expect the overnight desk person to be sleepy. But sleepy AND unfriendly, NOT! Four of us took the long ride from San Francisco airport to Monterey and we were just as tired as we could be. But we were still friendly! The night desk person could have cared less about us - no smile, no personality, no 'welcome to Portola"!
The hotel is nice, all rooms have balconies or patios and conveniently located to all things downtown Monterey with a Starbuck's right across the street. The room was spacious and clean and the housekeeping staff, doormen and valets were incredibly nice! Would I book there again? Probably not. I want to feel welcome, even at 2am.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street, a tip I saw on Trip Advisor!

We really enjoyed staying this hotel and it's very well located - pretty much walking distance to all the main places to visit in Monterey. Perhaps we got lucky because we had a really great experience all around from the valet service to check-in, to having a clean room - despite it being a dog friendly room.

Because we had our dog with us, they gave us a room near a staircase so it was very convenient to take our dog out when needed. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Upon check-in, they gave us cookies and my dog, a doggy treat - kind of a nice touch. Upon check-out, they let us have a late check-out and the bell hop was quite nice, making sure we double checked the room and got everything. Will stay here again the next time.

Room Tip: If you have a dog, ask for the rooms closest to the staircase (that lead to Pete B's Brewery).

The hotel has just been newly decorated with a nautical theme. The rooms look good and are well kept. The locally made mattresses on the beds are very comfortable. Since the new owners dropped the "Double Tree" franchise a few years ago the hotel has has seemed to be interested only in large groups there for meetings. Now Individual travelers seem welcome once more. There is a new spirit in all the staff who are uniformly very pleasant and helpful. Slightly better pricing is available. The breakfast is still good but now a buffet only.

Room Tip: Room 520 had a decent view of the bay over the lower buildings of the hotel. Overall it was spaciou...
