“Fantastic setting and staff”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

The hotel is situation in downtown Monterey, close to everything. If you are going to do a family vacation, this place is ideal. The harbor is a 2 minute walk, the acquarium (which is worth the money) is a short shuttle ride away, and the beach/park is also close-by. There is also a farmers market on Tuesdays that begins virtually at the hotels doorsteps and extends for 4 or 5 blocks.

We got a room with 2 doubles, and it was quite spacious. It was clean and quiet, and in the mornings we awoke to sound of barking sea lions.

We had breakfast every morning at Jacks, and the buffet is worth the $16. Omlette bar, smoked salmon, array of baked goods, pancakes, french toast, waffles, etc. And kids are only $6. We filled up and didn't need to eat until dinner.

The staff went out of its way to make sure our staff was enjoyable. Everyone wore a smile and was attentive to our every request.

Many corridors and walkways lead to many rooms with different outlooks, Ours was pleasant but noisy (faced north). Long walks to the outside (important if you're walking your pet). Good basic upper-mid-range furnishings and comfort level. Good food and attractions within walking range.

Stayed for 3 nights on a trip between San Francisco andLos Angeles along Pacific Highway 1. Rooms were very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The hotel has great amenities and is right in the heart of Monterey. We enjoyed being able to walk to all the main attractions from the hotel and the staff were very helpful in making suggestions and arrangements for tickets etc. In fact right from the minute we checked in until we left that was one of the biggest differences between this hotel and so many others - the staff actually cared and the service in any of the restaurants, bars etc was superb.
We ate in the hotel and the food was great, would thoroughly recommend breakfast which really set us up for the day even with three 15 year olds!! Do not miss Peter B's good food a hotel restaurant bar with a micro brewery!!
Used the fitness center which is just across the street from reception which was well equipped and not too busy. The pool made a nice distraction for the kids and allowed us some time to enjoy Monterey.
Would we go back without a doubt!! value for money excellent, service friendly and attentive, food excellent all in all a great hotel

We booked through PRICELINE.COM and got a pretty good room rate. Rooms are spacious and well furnished. Beds are new and quite comfortable. We love the sounds of gulls and seals. Have not been bothered by neighbor noise. Bars and restaurants in the complex are good. Best thing is the easy walking distance to the waterfront, almost connected to the Old Fisherman's Wharf, easy walk to Cannery Row and the Aquarium.

Room Tip: Off season is best season for Monterey. Go as low as $85 on bidding sites.

We love this hotel, but it is really an eclectic mix of 70's buildings and just a few notches above a Holiday Inn express. Rooms are CLEAN, staff is great, restaurants are improving and it is a very nice place to stay. Gym is weak as is the pool area. Location can NOT be beat!

Proximity helps determine the quality of a vacation! The Portola though not on Cannery Row certainly provides an outstanding location and convenience to getting where you want to go.
Located across a wide open pedestrian plaza was the Fisherman's Wharf, offering food, shopping, morning latte's and other wonderful experiences. There is a free trolley that runs
from 10:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. that can take you to Cannery Row and the Aquarium. It stops just a short walk from the Hotel. Though they were pretty booked up during our stay I never felt that I did not get immediate attention from the staff. Front desk was super attentive, the concierge was knowledgeable and informative, (if your planning on the aquarium they offer 2 day tickets for the price you can buy a 1 day at the aquarium)
The bellhops and valets were very courteous and never once made me feel I was an inconvenience. The only reason for the average rating is the cleaning staff, the rooms were great, beds comfy but I don't think the cleaning staff did there full job. I am not super picky but I want a clean room and I could never get over the feeling it was never fully cleaned. The towels were never fully stocked and I am not sure they ever really cleaned the floor in the bathroom before we arrived. The internet costs $10 per day or more depending on the speed your required. There was free internet in the lobby outside the bar with great seating available. I would choose to stay here again I just think they need to work on the cleaning staff! I don't feel the laziness of a few should deter from the very hard work of so many others! (We choose to enjoy the morning walk watching the sites and visiting the coast guard pier then spend the day shopping and at the aquarium and then take the free trolley back to the hotel)

Used priceline and got a killer rate. Were promptly checked in and the room was very nice but was hard to locate as I found the layout of the hotel confusing. I did not know there was not air conditioning until a few days before arrival and was a bit concerned. I opened the sliding door before bed and it cooled the room fine for us but this should be taken into consideration if you require A/C. The decorative outdoor "sails" had hardware that was constantly banging and clanging and so I was happy to have a white noise machine otherwise it would have been a problem. The bathroom reminded me of a Courtyard by Marriott bathroom, which I thought was odd for this caliber of a property. Tried to buy bottled water from the vending machine on the floor but it was completely out, which I found lame. The location was great, close to Cannery Row, steps to Fisherman's Wharf and the center of town. Would return for the right price. I'm rating this as very good due to the rate. Otherwise it would be average.
