On the route from LA to San Francisco we have stayed one night in Monterey (Spindrift Inn).Walking around in Monterey we could not find a restaurant that we liked. The lady at the reception advised us the Sardine Factory.Thank you.We have had a great dinner in the "glasshouse".Funny enough they only had one sardine dish on the menu, but that was great. The other dishes ,especially the fish, were excellent. All presented in a very relaxed and amicable way.The wine list was surprisingly good.So we were quite lucky in Monterey to find this place

eating in the gazebo room is beautiful, sitting by the fireplace before or after dinner lovely. Great helpful service staff, excellent food, we had a large party of 10 and everyone left with happy tummies !!

I read about this place everywhere. The food was fantastic. I had the butter poached halibut and roasted pork belly and the hubby had scallops and jasmine rice. Sit in the atrium for a wonderful view.

We've lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 35 years, but always avoided the Sardine Factory because of its location in very touristy Cannery Row. What idiots we've been! We finally went last month after a friend's recommendation and could not have had better food or service.

The restaurant is in its fifth decade of operation and the years of experience show. Everyone on staff knew their job and rendered service that was thoughtful and quietly efficient. On a week night we were offered our choice of dining rooms and opted for the traditionally elegant Captain's Room, a quiet setting where conversation could be had without effort.

I cannot imagine bringing kids or even young adults here. They wouldn't understand or appreciate the setting. This is a restaurant for adults, romance, good friends and business entertaining.

The menu offered a wide range of seafood, steak and Italian specialties. Our salads were extraordinary, a filet mignon with Bearnaise was perfect, and a pappardelle with shredded duck, was truly memorable. The wine list is extensive and for those on a budget, a set menu offers three courses for under $30.

If you're on Cannery Row enjoying the tourist sites, this is not the place to go. If you're in town and want to plan a special evening, you'd have a hard time finding better food, service and atmosphere than the Sardine Factory.

Service was deferential, thoughtful and efficient

I love to go there. One of the places featured in the Clint Eastwood movie "Play Misty For Me." Previous visit in the dining room was terrific, great food, wonderful ambiance. This time I ate in the bar. Atmosphere was wonderful, food was substandard. When speaking to the manager, felt my concerns were heard and addressed. Still highly recommend this place.
