My wife and I ate here for lunch on a weekday. Place was packed and rightly so...really good food and great beers on tap. We started with the BeerBattered Artichoke hearts (yummy!!) which were perfect, I had a Philly Cheesesteak that was quite good after a small addition of tabasco. My wife had a half sandwich and cup of clam chowder, both of which were great. Nice authentic British pub.

My husband came across the trip advisor reviews of Crown & Anchor and decided it was a place we should go. After looking at the menu, it seemed a bit bland in the 'few' things I would eat. (I'm terribly picky!) As we walked in the decor really stood out. The Scottish plaid carpet, lots of British Navy items, all the black and red furniture. The decor was fabulous. We were greeted by a friendly but seemingly shy waitress. My husband requested a Basil Hayden's Bourbon and a glass of water, and I went with the RC Cola. We also ordered an appetizer of their freshly made onion rings. Our drinks arrived very promptly, as did our onion rings. I'd highly recommend the beer battered, light as air onion rings. They are made from scratch, have a very light, not overly greasy taste and are seasoned perfectly. I'm not usually a fan of Ranch dressing, but their ranch dressing was a great compliment to the delicate flavor of the rings.

It came time to order our entrees. My husband ordered the Crown & Anchor burger. I ordered the U.S.S. Constitutions New York Steak with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The food arrived looking stunningly good. Both the burger and steak were ordered medium well. Neither came out the least bit dry or over done. The steak was seasoned to absolute perfection with some sort of garlic dry rub. It came with a pungent and slightly spicy au jus for dipping which made it's flavor all the more inviting. The mashed potatoes were mixed with parsley and butter, and covered in a thick rich brown gravy which spilled over on to the vegetable mix of zucchini, green beans, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli. Each of the vegetables were steamed to a tender but very flavorful taste. The burger looked fabulous on a well toasted bun with sharp cheddar cheese, smoked bacon and mayo on the side. There was no shortage of toppings on the plate, lettuce, pickles, red onion slices, tomatoes, etc. The french fries were steak fries, cooked to a golden crispy outside and soft tender inside. I heard they were delicious.

The bar was extensive, with lots of beer on tap, fine wines, every hard liquor imaginable, and a very extensive list of Single Malt Scotch, a list of 4 or 5 bourbons (which was a big drawing card for my husband.)

I couldn't recommend this place enough. The food was excellent, the ambiance was fun, a little loud and good for some laughs. Definately worth any parking troubles you might endure.

My husband & I live 65 miles north of Monterey, and we go to the Crown & Anchor for their beer-battered artichoke hearts whenever we have an excuse to go to Monterey. Their sticky toffee pudding is also excellent.

The Crown and Anchor is probably the most authentic of the several English pubs in the downtown area. The decor boasts lots of naval related items, even in the bathroom. The on-tap beer/ale selection is quite extensive, and the menu does not stray too far from the classic pub food. They are also open late!. Very highly recommended.
