We broke our tradition and decided to try a new restaurant for my wife's birthday. We liked the atmosphere at the Grotto so decided to try. What a great surprise. The staff was extremely warm and friendly. Our server, Mino, was first class and very accommodating to picky eaters. He is also great at wine suggestions for pairing with your food.

The marinated artichoke appetizer was to die for. I had a calamari steak with eggplant Parmesan style. It was extremely well prepared. My wife had boulliabasse which was also outstanding, although I am sure I misspelled it.

The staff checked on us, we were not rushed. The desert tray is just wonderful if you saved some room.

We visited this restaurant for lunch upon a recommendation from our hotel. We both had the fish and chips, which the portions were large and the fish was good. We had a coupon for a free appetizer so chose the grilled artichoke -- it was awful! Tasted like a weed! However, it was free, so we couldn't complain. The view is good -- sits right on the water at Fisherman's Wharf. They advertise their clam chowder as being some of the best in Monterey. I would tend to disagree, but did not have any other place to compare it to in Monterey. It definitely was not the best clam chowder I have ever had. The service was very good and our waiter was very attentive.

Although highly recommended by the Hotel staff, its just an average seafood restaurant. A water view table allows you to appreciate the abundant wildlife. The waitstaff is courteous; the wine selection weak.

....always eat here when we're in Monterey....clam chowder is the best! thick/lots of clams...you can taste-test it just outside their door before you decide to eat here. Free appetizer/your choice card given at the door...had fried calamari...nice flavor...hubby & I shared a pasta/alfredo sauce/shrimp dish...delish! comes with bread. Friendly staff/good service. Server forgot our clam chowder order...it came with entree after we reminded her...no charge for it.

This is a great place to grab a bowl of chowder, although they also have delicious salads, etc. The atmosphere is another good reason to visit- you feel like you're on an vintage yacht from the Love Boat era. Awesome service, fun atmosphere and tasty food!
