Owner description: For thousands of years people have made their living fishing the Monterey Bay, beginning with the Rumsien Ohlone, the native people of Monterey. From abalone to rockfish, everything was fished and the Monterey Bay was a multi-cultural stew. This entertaining tour led by noted fisheries historian and author, Tim Thomas, will take you back in time to explore the history of the fisheries of Monterey Bay and the people who made it Monterey famous.

“Amazing and fun tour!”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

The 2.5-hour walk of the waterfront and Cannery Row exceeded our expectations!! Our knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide, Tim Thomas, integrated history and culture in an tour that featured local scenery, props, rare photos, and historical audio clips. There was not a dull moment in this tour. He answered all our questions and showed us the nearest location of our particular interests. Although we live near Monterey and have been to Cannery Row several times, the tour gave us a better understanding and new appreciation of the area and the people.

We've had different walking tours around the county, but Tim's tour was by far the most informative. While Tim's presentation was very fun and engaging, the knowledge he shared with us was tremendous. It turns out that Tim has been educating the public for many years on local history; he was involved in several local historical projects and had been interviewed by local news media of the related topics. We highly recommend his tour for locals and tourists!!

“Fantastic Monterey Historic Cannery Row & Waterfront Tour”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

My wife and I are locals and have been to Cannery Row many times over the years. However we never knew all the history associated with this area. Tim Thomas is a wonderful guide with a fountain of information about Cannery Row and the Monterey waterfront. He augments his tour with a binder full of pictures, some quite rare, of the area's history and of the various ethnic groups that make the Monterey Peninsula such a diverse and interesting place to visit.
We will definitely be taking more of his educational and fun tours in the future. His tours should be equally enjoyed by locals as well as first time or returning visitors.

“Great experience!”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

This was wonderful. Tim is so knowledgeable about all the local history and presents it in an interesting and engaging way, including props and an album of old photos he carries around on the tour. He was open to all questions, and because the tours are very small they are personal and lots of room for individual interests/questions. I now have a whole new understanding of this area and its unique history. Thank you Tim!

On Nov 21 2012 inspired by Groupon 3 of our family participated in Tim's Cannery Row walking tour. One of us has lived in Pacific Grove for several years and the other two have read " The Death and Life of Monterey Bay: A Story of Revival." Consequently we were already aware of the complex human animal and plant history of this fertile bay. However, Tim significantly enhanced our knowledge and understanding of both the marine and shore line of the bay. We walked until 4pm and we had the impression that TIm was more than willing to continue and had not come close to telling us all that he knows. The benefit/cost ratio of his tour is extremely high.

My husband and I took Tim's Cannery Row tour this morning, and can only echo the previous reviews - it was outstanding! Tim is a walking encyclopedia regarding the history of the Monterey fishing industry and the people who lived through it. His mastery of the subject matter, his smooth, professional and low key delivery of the information and his personal acquaintance with some of those people an/or their descendants makes for a fascinating presentation, which is further enhanced by many photos and artifacts of the era. We have taken many guided tours in many settings in many places around the world, and would rate rhis tour among a handful of the "best".
