A lovely hostel, located near the heart of Monterey. Very friendly staff and a very welcoming and cosy living room. The breakfast is a lot of fun, you can bake your own pancakes and waffles. What's a bit less, you have to use tokens to take a shower. Every token is 4 minutes, so that's just about enough... But, that's the only downside. Further on, a lovely hostel.

This is my favorite hostel so far.... in America.
It was clean, spacious, hot water, clean bathrooms, clean rooms, clean sheets, clean towels, good staff, centrally located...

My teenage son and I stayed here for 4 nights back in April. It was cold, rainy, and totally Monterey while we were there.. They put my son in a boy's room, and me in a girls room. they gave us tokens for the showers and told us the kitchen was free reign.

they offered us pancake batter every morning and waffle and pancake grills.
they offer coffee all day long.

I bought our groceries at Trader Joe's and cooked in the kitchen along with other travelers.. I was surprised at how many older, solo travelers use hostels.
Most of the older people would get up early in the morning and sit in the great room on all the plush comfy couches and chairs and drink our coffee and get on the free wireless internet while the rest of the hostel slept.

The showers were clean and the water was hot.
Everyone we met at the hostel were interesting people on their way somewhere, visiting, coming back from somewhere.. everyone had a neat story to tell....
(that's why i love hostelling... people talk and interact with one another in hostels.. people don't talk to one another in elevators in hotels)

Most of the people staying at the hostel were there for the aquarium and for sightseeing.
I was there helping my ailing mom that lives in Monterey..

Beds were clean, everyone was considerate of noise levels, lots of games and conversation in the clean great room...
People are helpful towards one another... We had one physically challenged woman staying at the hostel and all of us made sure she was taken care of... we cooked pancakes for her, got her towel, helped her with her walking...

people are just nicer in hostels than in hotels...
unless you're the type of person that would rather not interact with other travelers.........

What can i say?... 1 am curfew, No Alcohol rule (which is fine) a sign on the back of the dorm door saying that if you snore you should consider staying somewhere else (no, seriously... like you snore on purpose) and lights out at 1030 - quite literally... they just go out.

When we arrived the gentleman that greeted us explained that they dont have a lot of water in Monterey (despite being on the coast) and therefore the government requires them to give out shower tokens to guests that allow you to shower for 4 minutes at a time....

Why lie????? Why not just say, we are trying to save water therefore we will give you a token for the shower? Had the chap have been honest then this wouldnt have been a problem... but as he lied - it was a problem.

Very very strange. Stay here only if you cant find anywhere else to stop.

This is a clean, well-located hostel, and would probably be ideal for older budget travelers and families. It is not the kind of hostel that many young travelers may be used to or looking for. It is not a party hostel. There is a no-alcohol rule that is taken very seriously, and a 1 am lock-out curfew. That said, I had no problem finding other travelers to go out with there, and the common room is very conducive to reading, eating, and (sober, well-mannered) socializing. There is a large central kitchen with plenty of appliances (though no range top) and even a good array of food for cooking. The pancake breakfasts were very nice. This hostel is quiet and the common area is well-lit, open and airy. I'd stay there again.

This is a good hostel, the staff was really nice and friendly. The dormroom was spacious with comfy beds. Bathroom was good, quite big and superclean! The kitchen was also really clean. Didn't like the showertokens (- too few!), the curfew and that the hostel was closed during the day (what's the point of having a hostel if it's never open!?). They were not superstrict with the rules though, so it wasn't as bad as I'd thought. Good value for your money, hard to find something this cheap as this place around Monterey. Would go back.

I drove up the coast to stay here for 2 nights and explore Monterey and was pleasantly surprised. The hostel is up to the normally high standards of HI hostels on the west coast. It was full both nights but did not feel cramped and parking was plentiful. I did not have to wait for the shower, there were free make-your-own pancakes in the morning and a $5 BBQ was on offer one evening. The location was excellent and within walking distance of cannery row, fisherman's wharf and the frontage bike path through Monterey and Pacific Grove down to 17 mile drive (free if you bike). There is also a Subway restaurant and grocery store within 2 blocks. The aquarium is only about 3-4 blocks. I felt very safe as a single woman walking around at dusk. I'd recommend booking in advance as it seemed to fill up quickly at the weekend. Staff was very friendly and helpful as well.

We just returned from a three day visit to Monterey, CA. We are a budget conscious family of four and wanted to spend our money on activities and great food instead of over-priced accommodations. We stayed at the HI-
Monterey Hostel occupying their two private rooms ($59/night plus fees/
tax). The toilets and showers are shared, European style. The location is within walking distance to all the attractions: aquarium, Cannery Row, shops, restaurants, etc. The Monterey Hostel is clean, well-maintained, secure and an amazing value. The staff was friendly and helpful. Remember this is a hostel and not a five star property. The hostel fosters a strong communal atmosphere and promotes budget travel.
