“Convenient location, beautiful breakfast deck, clean rooms need updating”
Reviewed August 26, 2011

I really thought this hotel would be nicer inside given we paid nearly $300 for 1 night. The room was clean & beds comfortable. The bathroom was old, and there was an old stove & fridge near the door that we weren't sure if it even worked. Near the TV there was a newer nice fridge. The lobby area had great snacks til 11pm (cookies, fruit, coffee & tea) which we very much appreciated, and the breakfast offerings were good too. The deck area where we ate our breakfast was probably the best part of this hotel experience.

Good location. Easy walking distance to the wharf. Free DVD for customers. I just did NOT like the cat/dog hair on the bed! The furniture/room/hotel is dated. Needs to be renovated. Adequate breakfast. Stayed here because of the distance to the wharf.

Room Tip: As with all hotels, the earlier you book a room, the room rates are better.

Thank you for your comments on our property. We do benefit greatly from our downtown Monterey location. Just a note that we do not allow ANY pets on our property or in our rooms.

We do constantly strive to improve our property and do appreciate your comments for improvement.

This place, with TLC, could be wonderful. It's in a quiet neighborhood within level walking distance to downtown Monterey.
The problem is with upkeep, apparently directed by an owner who just doesn't care. For example, every time we turned the faucet on, it made a loud sound and didn't stop until the water was turned off. We mentioned it to the Management and we were completely ignored. That, along with the power shutting down while using the hair dryer. When we asked them to fix the problem, they said we were using too many appliances! We were only using THEIR wall mounted hair dryer! That's a bad attitude.
Outside one of our windows, dead plants and empty flower pots filled a window box.
The bed covers were lumpy and didn't make for a nice appearance. Our sheets the first night had a permanent stain right where we were supposed to lay! There were many cords running from the wall-mounted TV to the floor, with no attempt to conceal them. The pictures on the walls were faded and cheap. There was a stain right in the middle of the carpet.
The landscaping under the carports was horrible. I could go on, but you get the point. Cheap fixes would make for a much improved property. To the Manager of Colton Inn: Please get rid of the dead plants (or half-dead ones) in pots throughout the property. Plant ferns in the shady areas...they'll do fine unlike what's there now.
People like fluffy quilts and crisp white linens on the bed...and doing that alone would help your guests decide to return. We visit the Monterey area once a year but only as a last resort would we stay at the Colton Inn unless some improvements take place.

Thank you for your comments about your recent stay at our property. Of course, any comments directed at repairs needed with regard to the rooms or landscaping are taken seriously and given immediate attention. This is certainly the case with the specifics you mentioned. Thank you also for your comments regarding attitudes. It's always easy to deal with the many postive comments we receive about our property, but it is the sign of a well run property and management who pays attention to the people we most appreciate....our guests! Thanks again.

This place was pricey for what you got. I think we had to pay extra because there was a hot tub on the porch out the slider from our room. It should be removed. The room was dark and needed updating. You did have covered parking. It was within walking distance of the restaurants, post office etc. Also, right across the street from the police station. However, the bed was good and we could find accommodations no other place. You need reservations in Monterey! The continental breakfast was not very good.

Thank you for your comments on your visit to our property. We do indeed offer an outstanding downtown Monterey location...we have many longtime guests who stay with us because of our location.

We do charge more for a room with a hot tub on a private patio...that was the room that you reserved.

We do constantly strive to improve our property, and do appreciate your comments for improvement. Thank you again.

We had a two queen room, which turned out to be roomier than we expected and with better amenities and facilities too. Excellent value. Good beds, good bathrooms. Large LCD TV, DVDs on loan. We did find breakfast a bit basic. All in all: nothing fancy, not a particularly romantic place, but exactly what the weary traveler needs, provided with cheery American no-nonsense efficiency. Generous motel style parking space, close to the room. Hotel is based in a pleasant residential neighborhood with easy access to Monterey sites and to Hwy 101. Will definitely stay again if in Monterey. Tip: consider walking up to Parker-Lusseau on Hartnell St for a true "continental" breakfast and real coffee.

I stayed here the 2nd week of August and it was awesome! The frontdesk staff was very accommodating with breakfast in the mornings and great knowledge on the surrounding area, helped in planning my day. The room I had was very clean and comfortable. The seigal that slammed into the sliding door can vouch for the cleanliness. Poor guy was stunned for a minute. 10min walk to the Ocean Dock with lots of shops/pubs on the way. This was the perfect location for anyone wanting to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather. I think the owner or manager (Dave) has a great crew working for him, from housekeeping to the groundskeepers and into the main office at the desk (I want to say Lisa but not sure) the morning f/d agent tended to the desk and the breakfast and did a fabulous job. Fresh Fruit, juices, coa-coa puffs and danishes. I didnt want to leave....great place t stay!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a patio door that leads out to the deck.

This was our first trip ever to Monterey, so we had no clue as to what to expect. There were issues with unreliable online maps and other directions that quickly raised our frustration level. This had nothing to do with the Colton Inn.
We did not find Monterey to be friendly to newcomers because of the way the streets are lined out and the extremely poor signage.

A gentleman by the name of Bill, one of the managers in the lobby turned things around for us. He was gracious, patient, and gave us absolutely spot on perfect directions on how to get to where we wanted to go. We needed his help on three separate occasions, and his courtesy, patience and kindness made our stay the best weekend we have ever had. The location of the Colton Inn is perfect, and the services they provide make this inn a most hospitable place to stay. The rooms are very nice and the availability of the various amenities (Continental breakfast, free DVD checkout, Refrigerator and microwave in the room, cleaning service, etc.) really tops it off. My sweetheart and I give the Colton in a Six Star out of Five rating!! Thank you Bill. You really are the best at what you do!
