Merritt House Inn

Just returned from a weekend at The Merritt House in Monterey with a group who had different rooms. Our friends had a fabulous room that opened to a beautiful, lush courtyard with outdoor seating. They loved it! Our room, however, overlooked an SUV parked right in front of our door. It was like a dark cave lit by only the french entry doors - lacking the patio to a courtyard and even paintings on the walls! The breakfast was okay - but I've had better at Hilton Hotels. Fresh fruit consisted of a couple of bananas and apples in a bowl; cereal was dry or instant oatmeal (they brought hot water for it) ; and the coffee was incredibly strong. The breakfast alone knocks it out of a 4-star rating. But the room was really disappointing. For the price, I'm sure travelers can do better in Monterey.

Don't bother with this place. Whilst it served its purpose as a base this inn is nothing to write home about. The room was massive and clean but the staff were rude and completely unhelpful. I would not stay here again. If you are considering staying in this part of California try and stay near Carmel or even cannery row in Monterey.

We stayed in a room with a king bed for $220/night including taxes and parking. The property is very nice, as is the location. It is walking distance to downtown. However, the regular non-suite rooms look nothing like the pictures on the website. Our room was not very nice. Clean, just not quite what I expected for the price. Walls were paper thin and you could hear everything in the room next to us. We would only come back to stay in one of the 3 suites on the property.

We met family in Monterey to run the Big Sur Marathon at the end of April of this year. I will admit that I was a little nervous when my sister told me she had found a Bed and Breakfast type accomodation for us. We were pleasantly surprised with the Merritt House. Unlike the usual cramped hotel room, our room was huge. The furnishings were very nice and the fireplace added a warm feeling.

The people who were on staff at the time were very friendly and accomodating. We did not get the feeling that they were bothered by any of our requests or questions. They gave us an excellent restaurant reccomendation each night that we stayed with them and filled us in on places to go during our stay.

On the evening before the marathon, they made sure that we we had fruit, juice, muffins, yogurt. and more to take to our rooms with us, since we would be up and running very early the next day.
If we make it back to run the Big Sur next year we will definitely stay at the Merritt House again.

I read all the reviews prior to booking at this hotel and I was not disappointed.
Here is the deal, there are only 3 suites in the Historice Adobe building, if you want to stay in one of those you will have to specify that when reserving your room. The rest of the 20 or so rooms are hotel style rooms, with fire place (logs provided, if you need more just ask), the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in, TV, skylight (great for airing out the room), french doors and an average but emmaculatly clean bathroom. I was in room 14 and I enjoyed it, neighbors only on one side of room.
The staff was very helpful and courteous!
The breakfasts were simple, I must admit that Cafe Noir which is a block away stole my heart. Great coffee and free wi-fi! If you are lucky you may be able to witness a few of the old Italian fishermen hanging out and speaking in their native tongue (if you close your eyes you can pretend you are in Italy!)...
The hotel has free wi-fi too, but I could only get it on the balcony, but i was offered the breakfast room to work in once breakfast was over.
The hotel is in downtown or Old Monterey. Walking distance to the convention center, the wharf and the aquarium if you like to walk. I did and it is a very pleasant walk along the pedestrian path...
The ONLY downfall of the hotel is that it was built in the 1970's and the walls between the rooms are not sound proof. High- pitched noises, coughing, yelling can be heard. For me it wasn't that bad, but if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs.
I can't wait to get back to Monterey to stay there again!

We booked this inn directly, and received a good rate. We had two rooms side by side. The inn keeper was very helpful in accomodating our party. This inn is in a fantastic location. It is in the heart of downtown, 1 block close to the convention center, but very quiet at night. The rooms are very nicely appointed with antique furnishings, very tasteful and clean. Beds are quite comfortable with numerous pillows and a large full comforter on each bed. Bathroom/dressing areas are spacious. Shower has great water pressure. Breakfast was very nice--a pot of coffee on each table, warm croissants, and a buffet of pastries, cereal, fresh fuits, bagels, yogurt. Free newspapers. Small tables for people to eat at. The service was very good and attentive, not intrusive. All the staff we encountered at the inn was friendly, warm and helpful. We could not get wireless internet service in our room so the staff helped us figure out that we coudl get it if we brought our laptop into the front building and offered a place for us to sit! We highly recommend this little charmer of a place and would definitely return here.

went to montery on a last minute road trip, expecting to stay at a hotel near the cannery, but found that the hotels were all very expensive, or very dumpy. we headed downtown and found the merritt house and loved it! we had a king size bed with goose down comfortor. the sink and vanity area looked like it had been updated recently and everything felt clean and nice. there were eclectic pieces of art that i'm sure are different in all the rooms. ours was spacious with vaulted ceilings, and a fireplace and logs to go with it. we were on the 2nd floor and had 2 french doors going out to a balcony that overlooked a courtyard. i wish we could have stayed longer! we'll definetly stay again!
