“Get location for a mediocre hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2012

The Otter Inn is right in cannery row and conveniently located within walking distance to the shops, restuarants, and of course the aquarium. Other than that it is not so great. We stayed on the 3rd floor with our sons and they had no screens on the window so i was paniced the whole time about them falling out the window. The bedding and towels were old and not very plush. The bed was uncomfortable. And if you are a light sleeper bring ear plugs because the sound of sea gulls and people comming out of the bars late at night can be disturbing. Although the fire place in the king bed rooms was nice.

This is a rare place indeed that seems to really care about giving the guest a good room at a good price. Off the street, I was quoted a rate that bettered nearby hotels, yet its location one block from cannery row was excellent and its rooms were large, clean, and very well-maintained, and laid out so everything was convenient. The manager gave me a basket at checkin that included energy bars, chips, and sweet rolls for the next morning. I was very impressed by the entire operation and recommend it highly.

Considering the prices of Cannery Row lodging, this place was a bargain. Right near the restaurants and attractions and affordable for where the location was. The staff was friendly but there were glaring problems that would not make us want to return. The front rooms faced a cacophony of seagull screaming. I mean non-stop seagulls screaming their bloody heads off all night long. If you closed the window, the rooms temperature made it almost unbearable to sleep. Also no wifi which was a big negative since we tried to upload pics we took to flickr. What struck us most oddly is that there were only electrical outlets in the bathroom. Not a single outlet in the room and all the wires to anything electrical disappeared into the walls. If you needed to charge your cells, in the bathroom they went and forget working on any laptops. Nothing to plug them in to. It was a bummer because the room was almost $200.00 a night and we expected more for what we paid.

Room Tip: Wifi and a pool is a must.

We loved the location, the room size and the balcony view to the beach. We enjoyed our stay because we were so close to cannery row for food and shops. We will definitely come back.

This was our second time staying at the Otter Inn. I love this place for so many reasons. One, is your just 2 1/2 blocks (if that) from the aquarium. They let you leave your car in there parking lot on check out till 4pm. So if you want to stay and shop you can. Second, your right behind Cannery Row so you can shop and drop your stuff off in your room. We like to have a couple of drinks with are dinner so we never have to worry about driving. Third, is the Inn is good if you have a budget. This is the only hotel I can afford so close to the aquarium. On arrival they give you a basket of snacks which comes in handy if you have kids and your going to the aqurium. Some down falls, the Inn could use some cosmetic updates but its clean, affordable and safe. They have a hot tub which is very small but it works and we enjoyed it especially after walking around the aquarium. Because the Inn is older the walls are not that sound proof. If you have kids put them on the bottom and if your a light sleeper ask for the top floor. One last down fall is its always booked on the weekends, so if you have a trip that falls on the weekend make sure you book in advance. The staff is always friendly and I will continue to use the inn when ever I am taking a trip to Monterey.

When checking in at the hotel we were told, there would be a loud wedding party staying for the weekend and if they got too loud after 10pm to call the front desk. When we checked into the room, we were satisfied with the view of the ocean and cleanliness. We did not book an ocean view room but were given one anyway which was great. The room was clean, and we were given a bag of breakfast snacks.
Parking is free which is a big plus.
The hotel is a bit old and worn down, but the room was clean. Also, keep in mind there is no A/C if you are staying in the hot summer months. Luckiliy we did not need the A/C.
Finally, when night came the guests were loud, and we decided to put in our ear plugs, which we take with us when we travel, we slept fine. Keep in mind the walls our thin, I would recommend taking ear plugs just to be safe.
Overall we were satisfied with our 2 night stay at one of the cheapest hotels in Monterey, but Great location.

Room Tip: Walls are thin, No A/C.
