“Great Staff, Wonderful Location, Fun Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2012

Visit Monterey at least every other year.
- This hotel is right downtown and a short walk (5 - 10 minutes) from the Monterey Wharf.
- Historic building and has an old feel (charming in a good way). Two teens liked it.
- Staff is really wonderful and helpful. Enjoyed talking with them.
- However....it's downtown (fun and convenient) and it's an older building so bring earplugs if
you need it to be really quiet. Continental breakfast is fine and a nice to have with kids.

We enjoyed two terrific nights recently at the Monterey Hotel located in the historical downtown. My wife and I loved our suite #409 with views of the Monterey Bay, antique furniture and the ambiance of this historical treasure. Yes, we had to climb the 4 flights of stairs but come on people, travel should involve some healthy exercise. We did take advantage of the Valet parking ($17 a day) which delivers your car to the front of the hotel.
I really appreciated the attitude and warmth of the hotel staff; top to bottom. These folks knew the town, gave great tips for hiking, activities and directions.Very helpful in a very timely way with great pride in the job they do at this quaint hotel.

Room Tip: Room with views of the bay are well worth it. The suite #409 was terrific.

The Monterey Hotel has character - it's an older hotel that's in a very good location. It was my second stay, and I would stay there again no problem.

The staff was helpful, friendly, and informative. The room came with breakfast, and it was enough. Bagels and the usual basic breakfast needs :)

Very affordable hotel smack dab in the middle of downtown Monterey. It's a little noisy at night if you have a room facing the street. But it wasn't much of a problem for me.

I stayed in the hotel's petite queen room (cheapest room size) in mid-may. The room didn't feel as small as I expected it would especially because the bathroom was a decent size. The only negative was that this room didn't have a vent for AC so it got a little warm. The overhead fan was wonderful, I kept it on all night and it gave off a nice breeze and noise buffer from other rooms/outside. I probably wouldn't stay in this room in the summer. Book last minute if you're traveling outside of high season- the room rate dropped from 140 to 99 when I booked a week before! Note, location is perfect I preferred this over Cannery Row. **bonus if you come early or want to walk around after you check out they will store your luggage for you, Huge plus

The Monterey Hotel has been renovated with great respect for it's hundred year plus history.
The staff is friendly, helpful and well versed in local information. Public parking is close by and inexpensive. The rooms have comfortable beds, antique headboards, armoires and curio cabinets. The bathrooms are trimmed in marble, well lit and provided with lots of towels and a dispenser for shampoo, conditioner and shower gel which saves on sending many little bottles to the landfill.
The breakfast buffet offers good coffee, Tazo teas, o.j., a variety of cereals, fruits, yogurt, and a choice of bagels and muffins. The local newspaper is available, too.
There are many attractions in the area, lots of good restaurants, cafes and the Tuesday evening farmer's market is always fun to shop, graze and listen to music.

Room Tip: Ask for a junior suite and a quiet room. No elevator, so ask for second floor rooms if you don'...

Our top floor room was 69 steps from the lobby. No elevator because this is a "historic landmark" and the owners don't seem inclined to activate the obviously historic elevator visible in the lobby. The rooms are so noisy the management leaves ear plugs on the bed stands. The sounds of seagulls penetrate the windows and the noise of neighbors penetrates the walls. The bed was not uncomfortable, the linens were adequate, the towels were a bit less so (one tore as I used it), the showere was hot and water pressure was wonderful. Also on the positive side, the location is on a main street which feels less touristy than most Monterey hotels. One can walk to the wharf and even to the aquarium if energetic (though the climb up to room will make you hesitate to venture to far out). There was a farmers market going the day of our arrival which required us to park behind the hotel to check in but the ambiance of the street scene was lively and appealing. The included continental breakfast was adequate but not memorable except that the coffee was better than expected.

Room Tip: It is probably quieter in rooms facing the back or to the south. Carrying luggage up the stairs can...

Ahmed was one the best things the hotel had to offer. He would carry everyone's luggage up 4 floors! Very loud street noise. No elevator. Breakfast was ok. Top floor haunted or something.
