“Great evening, excellent service”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

My sister and I took our parents here for their 35th anniversary. We told the staff right before desert and asked them to be 'descrete'. There was one candle in the desert and the waiter asked: "What is the glue" They both had to answer the question. Very subtle, very nice. During the night the service was great. We never had to ask for anything and they had a good sense of humor. Great fun, great food and a nice winelist.

“Really Fun!”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

Great recommendation by the GM of the Inns of Monterey - thank you for sending us here, Randy!

Awesome building. Great ambiance. Lots of history surrounding the structure and the neighborhood...which our server and the management crew happily shared. The booths on the mezzanine level are excellent. Perfect for people-watching.

Very attentive service. Detailed, vivid explanations of every dish. And we tried many of them...from hamachi to sweet breads, bone marrow, caramelized endive, and deviled eggs appetizers, to the lamb and truffle chicken entrees...all of which were very tasty and attractively presented.

Around 10 pm the dinner crowd thinned and a new bar crowd slowly formed as a DJ started to spin records. Fun!

Fire pits outside make for a great post-dinner gathering spot.

We'll be back. For sure!

“Solid dining experience”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

I was here for a wedding rehearsal dinner so I can't speak about the prices or value. It was a very nice venue for a small rehearsal dinner (about 40 people) and the food was good- scones, good drinks (my boyfriend got their local IPA and Jamison Whiskey), the appetizer was a fried hens egg or a bibb salad- both of which were very tasty, the meal had mushroom ravioli (excellent) and a choice of fish (black rock haddock or meat)- the fish was VERY tasty and went well with the ravioli. Nothing too fancy, everything was tasty. The portions were good. Dessert was a very interesting caramel/butterscotch pudding which I didn't care for much, but other guests enjoyed it. The place is pretty interesting and has relatively tasteful decor . Nothing to write home about but a very pleasant experience.

“Wonderful atmosphere, great food and service”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

We recently tried 1833 for the first time. We are locals and we went with good friends. The restaurant is located in a wonderful historical building in downtown Monterey. Our server, Dustin was absolutely a delight. Upon our request, we told us the history of the house and stories about it. He was helpful with drink descriptions and food orders. He is the best server that we have ever experienced. In addition to Dustin, the food and atmosphere was terrific. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. The room was quiet which was great for our conversation. The food is expensive, but very worth it. I think this will become our special occation restaurant. Try it - I am sure you will find it wonderful. Also, the outdoor fireplaces looked like fun, even though we did not sit out there.

“Unique dining experience”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

We recently enjoyed a meal in this unique setting. The restaurant is in an old Spanish style home. It made for a great atmosphere. Our service was excellent and the food was YUMMY! I would suggest the octopus appetizer (smoky tender flavors) I had the gnocci&rabbit and my husband had the scallops. Both were good, but I would especially recommend the scallops. My husband, being an art history buff, decided to experience the absinthe (they are apparently known for this.) He had the Parisian style..... sipping style... there is also a Russian style for the more inclined to "shoot" their liquor. This restaurant is pricey, with even the bread being a la carte, but is worthy. Enjoy!
