“I prefer the other 2 wharfs for more wildlife”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2014 via mobile

We saw this on TA and had to see what was different about this pier from the other two nearby.
This pier is 1/2 Coast Guard with huge security fences on the right side and a view of the Bay to your left.
At the end of the pier we saw the sea lions and Brandt's cormorants which were in their breeding plumage and were just starting to build their nests.
I got some good bird photos through the fence and to the left side of the pier.
Honestly, I like the other 2 wharfs better since you can look down and see the sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals and countless types of birds.

“Excellent for Wildlife Viewing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2013

We saw over 100 sea lions and a variety of birds. Also watched dolphins frollick about 50 yards out from where we stood. The kids loved it - we took fun photos and video.

“great wildlife-watching”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013 via mobile

Easy to get to and lots of wild marine mammals and birds to watch close-up. Be careful when walking down the pier- there aren't very many places you might trip if you're looking only out at the sea and not at where you're walking but there are a few and my traveling companion fell badly at one of them.

“Coastguard Pier”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

The Coast Guard Pier is a must see when visiting Monterrey. The water is crystal clear and your able to view starfish, jellyfish, fish, sea lions, sea otters and harbor seals up close and in the wild. There is a break wall at the end of the pier that's always loaded with sea lions you can view up close and personal.

It is just up the coast trail, between Fisherman's Warf and Cannery Row and a very easy and beautiful walk.

“Closer ups of some of the sea life”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

It's a very nice walk past the scuba divers on the grass, out along the pier.
Lots of close-ups of seal lions, harbor seals, and some of the birds. We had extra excitement as the Marine Mammal Center was trying to rescue/assist a sea lion with something wrapped around it's neck. Very nice young man also pointed out an animal they had previously rescued from a plastic 'collar' that threatened the animal. Another graphic example of how much we are polluting the oceans and threatening wildlife.
We were also lucky enough to observe three porpoises cruising and jumping out of the water parallel to the pier - bonus wildlife!
