As a child in Monterey, I made many trips to the Golden State Theater. Over the years, multiplexes became more popular and nearly killed the State -- new owners had divided the upper balcony into two screens and operated it as a "tri-plex" with little success. Concerned citizens and investors managed to purchase the property and restore it to its former glory before it was too late.
Now a venue for special events and concerts, the Golden State is alive and flourishing once again. I highly recommend attending a musical event -- the acoustics of the Golden State are excellent and were ahead of it time when originally built. If you visit Monterey when no event is scheduled, look into taking a tour. The fully restored theater is a delight to visit.
