The newly remodeled rooms at the Hotel Abrego are beautifully done. We arrived about 30 minutes before check-in and were informed our room was not ready. We were all set to just go for a walk and come back a little later, but the front desk clerk just offered us an upgrade to a deluxe room instead. The room was a nicely appointed corner room, with a view of the street and bay in the distance. The room included a large flat screen TV and alarm clock with an MP3 connector, along with a desk, king bed, and plenty of windows.
There were plenty of pillows on the bed, and more were located in the closet.

My only complaint on the room was the bathroom. It was beautifully done with a very large shower, although no tub, but there were some rather significant cut corners with the remodel. The bathroom was one room, with the tub/shower/vanity/sink/mirror all together. This would have been fine, however there was no vent fan at all. The door to the bathroom closed automatically, and with no ventillation or door stop to hold the door open, the room took a long time for the steam from the shower to clear out. There was no additional vanity area or mirror in the main room, and no full-length mirror was provided at all. These things would be beneficial additions, so that a woman could sit at the desk to put on makeup or do her hair instead of having to wait for the steam to clear out of the bathroom.

Overall the hotel was wonderful and very comfortable. The staff was gracious and helpful, and the room included free internet and a complimentary plate at the hotel restaurant.

The Abrego as of November 2009 is like 2 hotels in one: the one with the new rooms and flat-screen televisions for which you probably are rightly expected to pay top dollar. And then there are there are the renovated rooms from the Sand Dollar Inn. These rooms are pleasant-some (or all?) come with fireplaces and decks but on the down side the building can still transmit too much noise from movement above you (probably because they are original construction from the old Sand Dollar) and in our case, the plumbing too-when a toilet is flushed can sound like a waterfall moving down through the wall. Of course that is not constant, but for the price approaching $180 or more we don't think it's a good enough value. You can get better value by booking one of the many basic motels higher up on Munras Avenue for much less. So you decide. If you don't mind spending money, then get one of the new rooms. If you are looking for value-a basic room with cable etc, with a bit of work and pre-planning, you can do better.

Traveled back to California for a cousin's wedding. Since I was traveling alone, wanted a safe location. Also looked for value & location. I got every I was looking for with this hotel. It was conveniently located in the heart of Monterey, a short drive to everything as I was also able to take in some of the local sites. Got a free upgrade to a fireplace room. The room was newly renovated, bed was comfy & the bathroom was very nice. Hotel was quiet even with my room overlooking the main door & road. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it.

Pros: Spacious, modern and clean rooms. Fireplace in room. Free internet in all rooms.

Cons: Location (a bit of a walk to where the action was. And besides: We would rather recommend people to live in Pacific grove, a 5 min drive away. SUCH a nice little town - and it's where you'll find all the best restaurants etc). The breakfast was 10 bucks, but could have been much better. The AC didn't work all that well, and was noisy.

A lot of cons. But get me right: We did enjoy our stay.

Stayed 2 nights 3/4 Nov on way from LA to San Francisco. Hotel really nice. We had a junior suite and it was lovely. Free wi fi in room which was great for us booking hotels ahead. Sam on desk was really helpful and advised on good place to eat on Fishermans Wharf. We spent time in Carmel which was a lovely town but looked to be expensive! We also did the 17 mile drive which was worth it for the views. Good for photographers! Would highly recommend Hotel Agrebo for a stopover in a suite. Free parking also.

I stayed for 3 nights and it was a very pleasant experience. My room was clean, pretty and quiet. The staff could not have been friendlier and more accomodating. The breakfast buffet was very nice (great coffee, too) and when I initially checked in they gave me a coupon for a free "snack" plate at the hotel restaurant. It was delicious and quite ample. This is a place I would recommend to others and stay at again myself.
